Definition of eligible survivor Section 1 of the Statute defines the following as an eligible child: A child of a member by birth or adoption who is unmarried and under 18 years of age, a disabled child, or under 23 years of age, unmarried, and a full-time student enrolled in an accredited college or university with an extension of survivor benefits on file.
Survivor Protection • The plan includes provisions for your eligible child(ren) if you are entitled to receive, or are receiving, a benefit from the plan when you retiree. • Your child will receive a benefit equal to 100% of your monthly benefit if you die active or retired if there is no eligible spouse. If there is an eligible spouse, 50% of the benefits will go to the spouse and the remaining 50% of the benefits will be divided equally among other eligible survivors.

Monthly Supplemental Benefit(Section 4(d)) • A monthly supplemental benefit of $150. 00 will be distributed to eligible children. • If a member takes a deferred retirement their children are not entitled to the monthly supplemental benefit.
Annual Supplemental Benefit • The surviving children will receive 100% of the annual supplemental* benefit every January. • If you have a deferred retirement your children are not eligible for the annual supplemental benefit. • *The amount of the supplemental benefit is based on the date of retirement and the amount of the annual benefit(excluding the monthly supplemental benefit of $150. 00)
COLA(Cost of Living Adjustment) Upon reaching eligibility(firefighter’s 48 th birthday), benefits from the plan will be adjusted each year in October by a 3% cost of living adjustment and will be added to your children’s monthly benefit.
DROP /PROP Benefits Building Financial Security for Members and their families • If the member is survived by a spouse who was the member’s spouse on the date of the member’s DROP election became effective and one or more eligible children, onehalf of the member’s DROP account balance shall be paid to the eligible spouse, and the remaining one-half shall be divided equally among the member’s children. • If the member is survived by one or more eligible children, but not a spouse, the member’s DROP account balance shall be divided equally among the eligible children.
Life Insurance • Upon an active firefighter’s death the child will receive $10, 000 from the plan if there is no surviving spouse. • Upon a retiree’s death the child will receive $5, 000 life insurance from the plan if there is no surviving spouse.
