9 Jan 2018 Bell Activity: Finish Identifying the point of view for each of the 6 quotes from yesterday’s end of class assignment. Today we will…… Practice identifying literary point of view and then taking a quiz over it. Use the literary elements and a short story to help us better understand ourselves, our world, the people around us and how writers communicate with readers.
Identifying P. O. V INDIVIDUAL: Each student must first identify the point of view (P. O. V. ) for the excerpt from the back that they were assigned to answer. Then use the time remaining to identify the P. O. V for as many of the remaining 5 excerpts as you can. GROUPS: 1. As each member shares his/her answer, the rest of the group must determine if the answer is correct. 2. DO NOT ASSUME THE ANSWER IS CORRECT. 3. Once the group agrees on the correct P. O. V. , each member must write it on his or her own worksheet.
Steps to Identifying Literary P. O. V. 1. Draw a thin line through all the dialogue. 2. Search the narration for 1 st person pronouns. Circle them. --If you find 1 st person pronouns the story is written in 1 st Person P. O. V. 3. Search the narration for 2 nd person pronouns. Circle them. --if you find 2 nd person pronouns, but not 1 st person pronouns, the story is written in 2 nd Person P. O. V. If the story is not written in 1 st or 2 nd person P. O. V. , it is written in 3 rd person P. O. V. , and you must determine if it is written in 3 person Omniscient, 3 rd person limited OR 3 rd person Objective.
IDENTIFYING WHICH 3 RD PERSON POINT OF VIEW IS BEING USED. Once you have determined that the narrative is written in 3 rd person P. O. V. , you must determine the type. 1. Search the narration for instances where the narrator tells the reader what a character is thinking, believing or feeling. Underline those instances. 2. If the narrators tells what more than one character is thinking or feeling, it is 3 rd person, omniscient P. O. V. 3. If the narrator tells what only one character is thinking or feeling it is 3 rd person, limited P. O. V. 4. If the narrator does NOT tell what any of the characters are thinking or feeling, it is 3 rd person, objective P. O. V.
