9. 4 Selecting a Sample
Learning Intention Understand sample. and choose an appropriate
We can SAMPLE a population using different intelligent methods. Method 1: Simple Sample Each member of the population has an equal chance of being selected.
Method 2: Systematic or interval sampling Every nth of the population is selected. Example: often used in manufacturing.
Method 3 Cluster Sampling Every member of each randomly chosen group of the population is selected. Example: all students in grade 9 are selected to be given a booster shot.
Method 4: Self Selected Only members who are interested and volunteer will participate. Example: only people who phone in take part in a survey.
Method 5 Convenience Sampling Only members of the population who are convenient to include are selected. Example: survey done in a Costco store
Method 6 Stratified Random Sample Some members from each group of the population are selected. Example: Five randomly selected students from each grade are chosen.
Identify which sampling method would be the best for the survey. The student leadership team wants to find out if students would like the cafeteria to have longer hours.
A company packages boxes of granola bars. The quality control manager wants to inspect the product.
