What is a register? • A register is a way of speaking to someone based on your relationship. • In Spanish there are two registers: formal and informal (also known as familiar)
• There are two different ways to say “you” in Spanish. One is used for informal/familiar situations and the other is used formal situations.
Tú • This is the informal/familiar form of “you”. • You can use this with friends, family, people that are your age or younger.
Tú • A conversation between two people who use tú with each other might look like this. A: ¿Cómo estás? (How are you? ) B: Bien. ¿Y tú? (Well. And you? ) A: Muy bien. (Very well)
usted • This is the formal form of “you”. • You use this with people who are older and have authority over you. People you have respect for and people you do not know.
usted • Often you might address these people using the following titles: • Señor (Sr. ) Mr. • Señora (Sra. ) Mrs. (a married woman) • Señorita (Srta. ) Miss (an unmarried woman)
