Root Words • A root is a word part that contains the core meaning of the word. • A multitude of English words contain roots that come from older languages (i. e. Greek and Latin). • Understanding the meanings of a word’s root can help you determine the word’s meaning. Example: Hydr- is a Greek root meaning water. An example of a word with this root is hydrant.
Prefix A prefix is a word part attached to the beginning of a word to modify its meaning. Example: un- is a prefix meaning the opposite of, not. An example of a word with this prefix is unhappy.
Suffix A suffix is a word part that appears at the end of a root or base word to form a new word although some suffixes may not change word meaning. Example: -less is a suffix meaning without. An example of a word with this suffix is motionless.
RPS List #1 • Every week you will get a new worksheet with new roots, prefixes and suffixes. • Must find definitions of all and study for a quiz. • Ideally you will get new words on Mondays and be quizzes on Fridays.
