The first FOUR tenses are ONE WORD verb forms: • Le Présent • L’imparfait • Le futur • Le Conditionnel

Le Présent • Take the INFINITIVE, remove -ER, -IR, -RE and add… Je Tu On Il Elle Nous Vous Ils elles -ER -es -IR -is -RE -s -s -e -it -___ -ons -ez -issons -issez -ons -ez -ent -issent -ent

L’Imparfait • Take the NOUS form of PRESENT TENSE remove –ONS and add… Je Tu Il Elle On Nous Vous Ils -ais -ait -ions -iez -aient Elles

Le Futur • Take the INFINITIVE form of –ER, -IR verbs (-RE verbs remove final –E) and add… Je Tu Il Elle On Nous Vous Ils -ai -as -a -ons -ez -ont Elles

Le Conditionnel • Take the FUTURE stem of the verbs and add… Je Tu Il Elle On Nous Vous Ils -ais -ait -ions -iez -aient Elles

The next FOUR tenses are COMPOUND verb forms: • Le Passé Composé • Le Futur Antérieur • Le Plusqueparfait • Le Conditionnel Antérieur

Le Passé Composé • Use the PRESENT TENSE forms of the auxiliary verbs AVOIR or ÊTRE + the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb required • Use AVOIR if the verb is TRANSITIVE (= takes a DIRECT OBJECT) • Use ÊTRE if the verb is INTRANSITIVE (= takes an INDIRECT OBJECT) or REFLEXIVE • To form PAST PARTICIPLE: if verb is –ER, remove –ER add –É if verb is –IR, remove –IR add –I if verb is –RE, remove –RE add –U *** There are LOTS of irregular Past Participles***

Le Futur Antérieur • Use the FUTURE TENSE forms of the auxiliary verbs AVOIR or ÊTRE + the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb required • ALL rules for Passé Composé apply (which helping verb, past participle, agreement etc. )

Le Conditionnel Antérieur • Use the CONDITIONAL TENSE forms of the auxiliary verbs AVOIR or ÊTRE + the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb required • ALL rules for Passé Composé apply (which helping verb, past participle, agreement etc. )

Le Plusqueparfait • Use the IMPERFECT TENSE forms of the auxiliary verbs AVOIR or ÊTRE + the PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb required • ALL rules for Passé Composé apply (which helping verb, past participle, agreement etc. )
