8 MILLENIUM GOALS

Are the millennium development goals realistic solutions to solving the world’s problems, considering the gap between privileged and under – privileged countries?

Hunger and extreme poverty

Most of the world’s poorest people rely on agriculture for food and income, we support efforts to improve crop production and access to markets for smallholder farmers.

Education problems

With the help of donor funds and debt relief, in 2002 Tanzania was able to make primary education free for all Tanzanian children. Almost overnight, an estimated 1. 6 million children enrolled in school and by 2003, 3. 1 million additional children were attending primary education.

Gender equality

In 2005, Mozambique signed a new law that gave women equal rights as members of a household. Women finally received the legal right to divorce, create pre-nuptial agreements and inherit property. Men were now no longer the defacto head of household, and women are able to work outside the home without acquiring permission and can buy and manage financial assets.

Child mortality

With the help of donor aid and UN organizations, the Eritrean government commenced an aggressive approach to reducing child mortality increasing the number of children vaccinated from 9. 6% in 1991 to 76% in 2002.

Maternal health

In the mid-1990 s, the Honduran government adopted a four point plan to fight maternal deaths. The nation also initiated a monitoring system to determine the cause of death in all recorded maternal mortality cases. Five years later, Honduras had reduced its maternal mortality rate by half.

HIV / AIDS, malaria and other diseases

In Rand African’s University are AIDS education workshop designated exclusively for women.

Environmental sustainability

In 2007 Madagascar’s government established 15 new conservation areas covering over 2. 65 million acres of wildlife. The new parks will protect several threatened ecosystems including wetlands and rain forests.

Global partnership

Debt relief has helped millions in developing countries provide for their people.

How much is our country doing to meet these goals ?

As of 2004, Latvia’ s new regional affiliation and Latvia’s Millennium Development Goals require it to seek approximation to the European Union level of development by striving for equity and social cohesion. This means that, in the period up to 2015, Latvia’s domestic policies must address the elimination of inequalities between social groups.

Does our country focus more on some and less on others?

Latvia is progressing towards all of the Goals, however, the rate of progress differs from Goal to Goal. In certain areas, for example, reducing maternal or child mortality, or combating aids, effective measures and work with risk groups will make it possible to achieve the Goals sooner. In other areas, for example, ensuring equal pay for women and men, or universal secondary general or secondary vocational education, progress is slower. Life expectancy of males is increasing very slowly and is still extremely short when compared to the European average.
