HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE • Presented annually by the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI). The SCBWI began in 1971 by a guild of Los Angeles-based children's writers. • Established in 1973, it is the only children’s literary award judged by a jury of peers, i. e. , fellow writers and illustrators. • Recognizes excellence in children’s literature in four different categories: Fiction, Nonfiction, Picture Book Text, and Picture Book Illustration. • Ceremony is held every August at the Golden Kite Luncheon at SCBWI’s Summer Conference.
