Popular Sovereignty- The belief that government is dependent on the desires of the people Examples: Ø Voting and elections Ø Preamble—”We the People… establish this Constitution…”
Republicanism- Government is run by representatives who were chosen by the citizens of the country or Examples: state Ø Leader of country chosen by elections Ø No king or dictator
Limited Government- Government with limited powers strictly defined by law Examples: Ø Constitution says what Congress can & can’t do Ø Also what actions states can’t take
Federalism- Sharing power between the federal and state governments Examples: Ø Delegated powers—powers of U. S. Government Ø Reserved powers—powers kept by the states
Separation of Powers- Powers are divided among 3 branches to make sure no branch has too much power Examples: Ø Congress creates laws Ø President enforces the laws
Checks and Balances- System by which each branch limits power of other branches Examples: Ø Congress can impeach and fire the President Ø President chooses Supreme Court Justices
Individual Rights- Principle that recognizes peoples’ fundamental rights Examples: Ø Bill of Rights Ø Protect people from an overly powerful government
