7 E Obtaining and Presenting Obtaining data
Lesson objective • To carry out a practical safely and gather valid results that can then be processed.
• Refresh: what is your hypothesis? • What type of data are you collecting? Practical You are going to investigate how the mass of tablet/amount of spatulas affects the time taken for the tablet to dissolve/turn the acid green
Structure • Each group needs to test 4 different indigestion tablets. • Divide each group into 2 pairs • Each pair should test 2 tablets (repeat each one if time) • Share results
Apparatus (per group of 4) • • • 2 x conical flask 2 x measuring cylinder 1 x pestle and mortar 1 x bottle of Universal Indicator 2 x spatulas 2 x stopwatch (access to a balance) 4 different brands of indigestion tablet 2 M HCl
Method 1. Collect apparatus 2. Measure out 30 ml of Hydrochloric acid (HCl) into a conical flask. Add a few drops of U. I 3. Take an indigestion tablet and crush it using a pestle and mortar. 4. Measure out 0. 25 g (or 1 ‘spat’) of crushed tablet and add it to the conical flask. 5. Start the stopwatch and time until the tablet dissolves (or turns the solution green). 6. Rinse out the contents of the flask and repeat using your different masses (spatula loads) 7. REPEAT STEPS 2 -6 for the different tablets. 8. DON’T FORGET TO RECORD YOUR RESULTS!!!
• In your next (maths) lesson, you will present this data on a piece of graph paper.
