The Purpose of This Policy The purpose of this policy is to protect the safety of Hotel guests, visitors and team members by responding promptly and correctly to the sighting or reporting of a weapon. For the purpose of this policy, a “weapon” is any firearm (gun, rifle, etc. ), ammunition, explosives, weapon-style knife (such as a switchblade knife or a military-style knife), martial arts weapon, blackjack and crossbow archery equipment. Our Weapon Policy Team members may not bring weapons onto Hotel property or have a weapon on Hotel property on their person, in their locker or in a vehicle to which they have access. Security officers may carry small batons for defensive purposes and to help protect the safety of others. Team members may be in possession of certain legal defensive devices, such as mace and pepper spray, if they are concealed and not displayed. Hotel guests and visitors may not openly carry or display weapons on Hotel property, unless they are active law-enforcement officers or military personnel. We do not allow private security guards to carry weapons on Hotel property, except when approved in advance by the general manager for special, temporary circumstances. Procedure for All Team Members Who Find a Weapon If you see a weapon on Hotel property (for example, in a trash receptacle or bushes), except a guestroom or locked vehicle, do the following: 1. Do not touch it. The weapon may have been used in a crime, so your touching it may destroy important criminal evidence. 2. Do not leave the area unattended. Attempt to get someone's attention to call the front desk while you keep the weapon in sight. 3. Keep others away from the area until the manager-on-duty or police arrives. Procedure for All Team Members Who Find a Weapon (cont. ) If you see a weapon in an unlocked vehicle, do as described in the three previous steps. If you see a weapon in a locked vehicle, report the matter to your supervisor or the manager-on-duty. Procedure for All Team Members Who See Someone Carrying a Weapon If you see someone, except for a uniformed law-enforcement officer, carrying a weapon or possibly carrying a concealed weapon, recognize that a potentially urgent life-threatening situation may exist. Do the following: 1. Do not confront the person. 2. Call the front desk and describe the situation and location. 3. Keep clear of the area and keep others away from the area. Response by Front-desk Team Members to the Report of a Weapon If while working at the front desk you receive a report of someone carrying a weapon, stop all other activities and immediately call 9 -1 -1. Describe the situation including the exact location of the sighting. Then, contact the manager-on-duty. If you receive a report of a weapon being found on Hotel property or in a vehicle, do not call the police, but contact the manager-onduty at once. The Manager-on-duty’s Response to a Reported Weapon If while serving as manager-on-duty you receive a report of someone carrying a weapon, do the following: 1. Stop all other activities and respond at once. 2. Confirm that the police have been called. 3. Do not confront the person carrying the weapon. Keep Hotel guests, visitors and team members away from the area. 4. Stand by and wait for police assistance. 5. Cooperate with the police investigation. 6. Get a copy of the police report. 7. Stop all other activities and respond at once. 2. Go to the area and make sure it is secured. Do not touch the weapon. 3. Keep Hotel guests, visitors and team members away from the area. Go to the guestroom and investigate. Do not touch the weapon. 3. If the weapon appears to be properly secured (such as by a gun lock) and the guestroom is currently rented, take no further action. If the weapon does not appear to be properly secured, make arrangements to talk with the room's occupant (such as immediately locating the guest or leaving a message for the guest to call you). If the guest does not return your call, keep trying to reach him or her. Review the guest's registration card and folio before you speak with him or her. When you speak to the guest, use the following statement as an example: “Mr. Jones, one of our staff noticed a firearm on the dresser of your room. It did not appear to be secured, so I am concerned about the safety of our employees who need to enter your room to do their work. If children are sharing the guestroom, explain that the law requires that firearms are secured from children's access. If the guest becomes confrontational, call the police. Do not argue with the guest. If the gun was found in an unoccupied guestroom, call the police and stand by and wait for police assistance. Get a copy of the police report. If a weapon is found and unclaimed, turn it over to the police. If a guest inquires about the return of a weapon, refer him or her to the police. I. Our Weapon Storage Policy We do not store weapons for Hotel guests or others.
