The Purpose of This Policy The purpose of this policy is to protect the lives of Hotel guests, visitors and team members by responding correctly to a medical emergency. Also read the policy Guest Request for Nonemergency Medical Attention. B. Medical “Emergency” Definition A medical “emergency” is distinguished from other medical incidents as one that requires immediate attention to prevent a victim's medical condition from deteriorating. Emergency Medical Response by All Team Members If you discover a Hotel guest, team member or other person who requires medical attention or requests emergency medical treatment, do the following: 1. Touch “ 0” on a house telephone to instruct the Hotel operator to notify emergency authorities and the manager-onduty. You may alert emergency authorities directly by calling “ 9 -1 -1” on an outside telephone line. 2. Provide comfort to the victim and try to keep him or her calm. Reassure the victim by telling him or her that help is coming. 3. If you are trained to provide emergency medical help, proceed as trained. See the section on First-aid Treatment in this Guide. Make all observations on the medical condition of the victim that may help those who later give treatment. 5. If possible, stay on the telephone with the 9 -1 -1 operator to answer questions and follow his or her instructions. 6. Do not attempt to move the victim, unless the current location is a threat to his or her safety. 7. Do not offer or dispense any medicines, including aspirin, except if the victim asks for help getting or taking medicine that he or she has on-hand or nearby. 8. Clear the area for ten feet around the victim, so that emergency medical responders have space to work. Prop open any doors needed for them to access the area. 10. Do not tell anyone that the Hotel will pay for his or her medical treatment. 11. Respond sympathetically, but do not make statements to anyone about who may be at fault or responsible for the situation. 12. See your Hotel-specific Emergency Information Guide for the location of the following: v first-aid supplies v Emergency oxygen, if available v Defibrillator (AED), if available If you are aware that emergency medical equipment is not operating properly or a first-aid kit is low on supplies, notify your supervisor. Emergency Medical Response by Managers-on-duty and Supervisors When you supervise a Hotel medical emergency, do the following: 1. Check to be certain that emergency medical authorities have been notified. If a 9 -1 -1 call came from a guestroom, get the room number. 2. Go to the area, taking the oxygen tank and incident response bag. 3. Assess the need for immediate life-support actions, such as CPR, oxygen, control of bleeding, etc. , and call upon other team members for assistance. 4. Instruct a team member to meet the emergency vehicle at the Hotel entrance to direct emergency responders to the correct location. Continue ► SAFETY & SECURITY GUIDE © Marin Management, Inc. 7

If the event is above the first floor, have the elevator held and attended for the arrival of emergency authorities. 6. Follow the steps described in the section Emergency Medical Response by All Team Members. 7. If emergency authorities have not arrived, use a nearby telephone (or have someone else use a nearby telephone) to call 9 -1 -1. Describe the medical situation to the 9 -1 -1 dispatcher and ask for advice on how to attend to the victim while waiting for emergency authorities. Incident Reports for Medical Emergencies The supervisor in charge is required to prepare a written Incident Report after all medical emergencies. After the medical emergency is under control by emergency authorities, complete and distribute a written Incident Report. Start the report by doing the following: 1. Talk with all witnesses to the events. 2. If an accident occurred, investigate the area. 3. Take photographs of the area. 4. Record information about the condition of the victim such as possible intoxication, drug use, physical limitations, etc. 5. Record where the victim was taken.
