600. Emergency Response Guide, 604 Bomb Threat EMERGENCY B. If You Receive a Bomb Threat The telephone is the most common means of receiving a bomb threat. Usually the telephone operator receives the bomb threat call, but the call may be received by any team member or Hotel guest. Treat a bomb threat seriously. If you receive a bomb threat by telephone, take the following actions: 1. Remain calm and courteous. Do not argue with the caller. 2. Listen. Ask him or her to repeat the message as many times as possible while you record it exactly. Pretend difficulty with hearing to keep the caller talking. 4. If possible, signal someone else to monitor the call at the same time to be sure nothing is missed. 5. Do not hang up until the caller has hung up. 600. Emergency Response Guide, 604 Bomb Threat EMERGENCY C. After the Bomb Threat After you have received a bomb threat, take the following actions: 1. Call the police, 9 -1 -1. 2. Immediately notify the following people, even if they are not on the Hotel property: v The general manager or manager-on-duty v The maintenance supervisor 3. After the Bomb Threat (cont. ) Do not discuss a bomb-threat situation with anyone other than by reporting information as this policy outlines. Your discussion of the bomb threat with anyone else could harm an ongoing investigation. It is important that you direct any inquiries by the news media or others only to the general manager. The Manager-on-duty's Response to a Bomb Threat As the Hotel's manager-on-duty, take the following actions in the event of a bomb threat: 1. Notify the general manager, at home if necessary. 2. Establish an operation control center. The telephone switchboard area is the designated control center, as in other emergencies. 3. Do a roll call of all employees. Make one Hotel team member the designated operator with no other responsibilities. The operator must be available to receive and transmit any information immediately. The operator must be careful to avoid statements to persons not involved in the situation. 5. If needed, establish an evacuation team. The evacuation team consists of the manager-on-duty, any available supervisors and any available maintenance staff. See the policy Evacuation in this Guide. Procedures for a Bomb-search Team In the event that the police or the manager-on-duty needs a bombsearch team of Hotel team members, conduct the search in the following manner: 1. Conduct the search in a manner so as to avoid both panic and interruption of business, if possible. 2. Remember you are a searcher, not a bomb expert. 3. Unless a specific area was indicated in the threat, include interior and exterior areas in the search. 4. Follow a predetermined search sequence and procedures. 5. Carry flash lights. Start at the sides of each room and move toward the center. 8. Do not use radios for communication during the search. The radio signal may activate a bomb. 9. Mark or seal off areas where the search is complete. 10. Do not touch or disturb anything suspicious that is found. 11. Immediately report anything suspicious to the control center. Report to the control center when each area or room is completed. This is a standard procedure and does not fit all situations.
