6 Things you should know Things to remember
6 Things you should know Things to remember after your MBA RSM - a force for positive change
1. Taxes (Belastingdienst) Housing Allowance: - If you start generating income, “The Dutch Man” (aka the Belastingdienst) will want some of the housing allowance back. You will get a nice collection note on your mail 12 -15 weeks after you start receiving an income. More information about the rules for housing allowance can be found here. 30% Ruling: - This is a tax advantage for highly skilled migrants moving to the Netherlands. When the necessary conditions are met, the employer can grant a tax-free allowance equivalent to 30% of the gross salary subject to Dutch payroll tax. Detailed information about the ruling and its implications can be found here. Study Cost Deduction - If you are not elegible for the 30% ruling, you can deduct some of your study costs from your taxable income. For more information click here. 12. 09. 2021 2
2. Healthcare Insurance Having insurance in Netherlands IS MANDATORY! You can ONLY change your Insurance every year in November-December (you can get one at any time). Choose wisely. - If you don’t have insurance, on top of possible fines, the insurer will back charge you for all the time you weren’t insured so the expense might be SIGNIFICANT. You can compare insurances here. The Health System - Dentists usually charge you for X-rays for the first consultation; this cost is independent of your extra dental insurance and can be around 150 euros. - Dutch doctors don’t use antibiotics unless you’re having a near-death experience. Most of the time, paracetamol and rest is the prescription. Hello. Doc. nl is a great, expat friendly resource to navigate the healthcare system in the first years. 12. 09. 2021 3
3. Inburgeren & Driving If you want to stay in the Netherlands in the long term, it is always wise to do the inburgering (integration) test. Inburgenren: If you want to get a Dutch nationality in the next couple of years, or a permanent residence, you might need to do the inburgerings examen (which is a language and culture integration test). Before July 2021, the requirement is A 2. After this date, you will be required to demonstrate a B 1 level proficiency. You can find information here: https: //inburgeren. nl/ Driver’s license: If you get the 30% ruling, you can exchange your existing license for a new one. If you didn’t get this benefit, you will have to take the tests to get a Dutch driver’s license. This can be done in English, but the cost for classes and the exam is significant. To ensure your success chances, you can practice for the test here: https: //trafficrules. com/en/netherlands/practice-test 12. 09. 2021 4
