Why teach syllables and syllabication? “Teaching syllable types and syllabication allows a reader to break words into small manageable syllables. This helps to teach a reader to see parts of a word, hear the individual sounds and then read the word. ” -Recipe for Reading
Why Teach Six-Syllables? 1. Syllable instruction improves spelling and reading skills. 2. Our language is rule driven. If students understand syllables our written language follows those rules 97% of the time. 3. Syllables help students organize all of the rules for easier spelling and reading retrieval. 4. Syllable instruction is part of our scope and sequence and is important for higher level phonics instruction. 5. We will be looking at spelling programs for our school as well as more in-service time in the area of morphology/vocabulary.
Important! 1. Students must understand the difference between vowels, and consonants. 2. Explicitly teach what a syllable is and each type of syllable. 3. Students leave 2 nd grade with solid syllable understanding.
