6 Kingdoms of all Organisms Bacteria Protists Fungi
6 Kingdoms of all Organisms • Bacteria • Protists • Fungi • Plants • Animals
Bacteria • Single-celled • No Nucleus • Can be Harmful or Helpful • Can only be seen with a microscope
Protists • Single-celled or Multi-celled • Characteristics of plants, animals and or fungi • Examples are algae, slime mold and amoebas
Fungi • Single-celled or Multi-Celled • Has a Nucleus • Gets nutrition by absorbing nutrients from decomposing organisms – Doesn’t make own food like plants • Ex. Mushrooms • Ex. Athlete’s Foot
Animals – Two Main Classes Invertebrates – No backbone Vertebrates - Backbone • • • Mammals Reptiles Fish Amphibians Birds • • Insects Worms Lobsters, Shrimp, Crabs Jellyfish
Mammals • • • Give birth to live young (exception: Platypus) Have hair or fur Nurse babies with milk Warm-blooded Tricky Mammals: Bats, Whales and Platypuses
Reptiles • Cold-Blooded • Scales • Usually lay eggs • Ex. Snakes, turtles, alligators
Fish • • Live in water Lay eggs Cold-blooded Use gills to breathe under water
Amphibians • Cold-Blooded • Moist Skin • Live on land water • Ex. Frogs, toads, salamanders, newts
Birds • Warm-blooded • Have feathers and wings • Usually fly (exceptions are penguins and ostriches) • Lay eggs
Plants Vascular – tube transport system • Use a vein-like or tube structure to suck in water and nutrients • Can be large in size • Can live further away from water source • Ex. Roses, Oak Tree, Ferns Non-vascular – No tube transport system • No tube system to transport water • Absorbs water directly from the ground • Must live near water source • Very small in size
Invertebrates • Do not have a backbone • Ex. Worms, insects, jellyfish, lobsters, shrimp, crab
Non Vascular Plants • • No tubes to carry water or nutrients Reproduce by using spores Examples are mosses, liverworts, and hornworts Many species are short and grow close to the ground
Vascular Plants and spore reproduction Ferns-They do not have seeds. They use spores to reproduce.
Vascular Plants with seed reproduction • Angiosperm-Makes fruits and flowers • Gymnosperm- no fruit or flowers, no seed cover
Angiosperm • Makes fruits or flowers • Most plants are angiosperms
Gymnosperms Conifers-Pines, spruces, firs
Gymnosperms • Cycads
