5 Themes of Geography Mr. Penny
Location § Absolute Location: Home address, GPS coordinates, or latitude & longitude § Relative Location: Describing the location of a place in relation to other known places. Relative location means to locate a place relative to other landmarks while absolute location is locating a place using a coordinate system. Using CIA website: Click the geography tab, location = relative location (put in in your own words), geographic coordinates = absolute location.
Place § What is a place like ? § What physical & human characteristics make it unique ? § Physical characteristics: (landforms like mountains & rivers etc…, weather) § Human characteristics: (Man made features like cities, famous landmarks, buildings , etc…) § CIA website: Under geography tab find climate and terrain and put both into your own words. You can often also includes pictures that help represent the place.
Region § Region divides the world into manageable units for geographic study. Regions have some sort of characteristic that unifies the area. § Example of the region we live in are: Mid. Atlantic, Greater Philadelphia area, Delaware Valley, North East § Describe the region using your geography knowledge.
Movement § How do humans move ? § So do ideas, styles, goods, resources, and communication all travel distances. § This theme studies movement and migration across the planet, methods of transportation and communication. § On CIA website under transportation tab find: # of airports, ports & terminals, Km’s of railways, km’s of roadways and under communication tab: # of internet users.
Human Environment Interaction (HEI) § This theme considers how humans adapt to and modify the environment. Humans shape the landscape through their interaction with the land; this has both positive and negative effects on the environment. § On CIA website under geography tab find: Natural resources, land use (% of arable land), environment current issues (pollution, etc…)
