Thank you for downloading! Are you a new technology teacher? You’re going to love your new teaching assignment if you are. Been around a while? These lesson plans and activities will save you so much time and renew your love for all things teaching tech. If you haven’t yet, start with the video in your folder. That will be a great introduction to how these lesson plans and rationale pages work. In these lessons, I link to dozens of websites. If a website stops working (permanently) please let me know and I will replace it with an alternative. I recognize that I am not giving you an editable website option and that you’re paying for a few short pages, but the time I spent putting the lesson together on my class website is the major value here. I hope it saves you time and effort and that your students enjoy it!- Brittany This download gives ONLY you and your students permission to use the website linked in the lesson plans. Setup You may or may not choose to print these lesson plans. If your administrator requires paper plans, then you can customize the lesson plan pages to be what you need and print them out. Option 1: 3 ring binder. I did my best to save a little extra room on both sides of every page so you can put in 3 hole punches. If you have a double sided printer then it works really nicely to have the rationale page on one side and the lesson plan for the next lesson on the other side. That way when you have the binder open you’re looking at one lesson at a time. Option 2: Binding. If you have a binding machine you will LOVE using it for these lesson plans. It makes it so easy to carry around. If you have a double sided printer then it is less than 40 pieces of paper. Kindergarten © Brittany Washburn
Setup Honestly, you won’t really even need to “plan” anymore with this resource. Just double check that you understand the lesson (so that you can provide tech support to students) and customize the lesson plan for yourself. Done! It took me years of teaching in the computer lab to put these lessons together and I am so happy to be able to share them with other teachers. Within my scope and sequence, I saved a little wiggle room for extenuating circumstances in your schedule. Snow days, field trips, and state testing get us off schedule all the time. I’ve never been able to complete a full 40 weeks with any grade level. FAQ: Q: Some of the websites ask for a username and password but my school doesn’t have an account. How do I use them? A: You might have to skip some of the activities if you don’t have a school account. Just let students know to disregard that part. Q: How can I get my students onto the website quickly? A: Options- 1. Have the page linked to your school website (or whatever website is the home page when your students open the browser). 2. Make a desktop shortcut on each computer that goes directly to k 5 technologycurriculum. com. 3. Use a software like Lanschool to push the link out to your students. 4. First Day in Tech Lesson 1 Rationale: The first day in the tech lab will be full of procedures, getting the login right, finding their way to the website, etc. so the lesson itself should be review and should be short and sweet. This is what the web page will look like when students get there. On our computers we have Microsoft word so that is what I have my students use, but if you have another program (like google docs) this assignment can be completed using any word processing program. For 5 th graders this should be review. At the end of the lesson there is a link for what to do if they finish early. I call these “sponges” because I’m asking them to do a quick activity and learn something (absorb it like a sponge). If you have an early finishers activity you would prefer just direct them to that when they are finished. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn
Strand: Empowered Learner Standard: 1. d. Students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use, and troubleshoot current technologies and are able to transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies. I Can Statements: I can log into my account on a networked device I can use word processing software to create a poster I can follow classroom procedures Lesson Title: First Day in Tech Lesson 1 Lesson Brainstorming: First day. Intro to my procedures. How to enter the room, how to log in, voice level expectations, how the computers should look when it is time to pick up, etc. Resources Needed: My own list of their logins in case they are new or don’t remember from last year. Copies of: No copies, well maybe login cards Proof of learning is the finished “computer lab rules” poster. 5 th Grade
Procedures and First Project Lesson 2 Rationale: The second time your 5 th graders are working in the computer lab, be sure to establish an entrance procedure. I like to start with about 10 minutes of keyboarding at the beginning of every session. This makes the transition so smooth and within a few months they are pretty efficient typers. I put a timer up on my Smart. Board, but you could use anything you have to mark the time. The main activity for this lesson is a paired project. My advice is to pair them up yourself, but if you’re feeling adventurous then let them choose. Also be prepared that if you want them to present their findings you’re going to need class time to do that. The purpose of the Padlet at the bottom is so that they can see each other’s questions and solutions. This also gives them a place to come back to in the future when they need an answer to one of the problems. This lesson doesn’t have an answer key because many of the questions are open ended. At this point the purpose is more to perform a search than to get a right or wrong answer. If you’re using my Technology Teacher Binder, mark the date for your students who have mastered the skill. Your teacher role during this lesson is to observe their abilities. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Lesson 3: How to Read a Webpage Rationale: Have your students keyboard for the first 10 minutes of class. Then, introduce the lesson for today. They are going to be using a website that has learning modules for the next few weeks. This first introductory lesson is all about the parts of a web page. The vocabulary should be a review from last year. If you haven’t started yet, the terms that your students are coming across in these lessons should go on a word wall somewhere in your classroom. The word wall can be digital, but research shows that word walls work best when they are at least partially student created and always visible. The learning module for this lesson is called “How to Read a Webpage. ” and has basic information about what websites look like and how to navigate them. At the end there is a “Try This!” activity. If you’re doing paper journals or notebooks, have students answer the questions there. If you’re fully paperless, you can have students enter the answers on your class website, in your learning management system, or with a partner in class. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities for the remainder of your time. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Lesson 4: Evaluate a Website Rationale: Have your students keyboard for the first 10 minutes of class. Then, introduce the lesson for today. There are 8 websites to evaluate and a worksheet that goes along with it. Assign students one of the 8 websites to use to answer the worksheet questions. The websites are linked but I chose to show the whole URL instead of the site title so that they can see the. com, . org, etc. and start to build an understanding of the differences. It is up to you whether this is a small group or individual activity. I’ve done it both ways and prefer that they fill in the worksheet independently. It is fun to have them group up after they evaluated their website to see if the other people with the same website came to the same conclusion, so if you have time at the end it is a great way to wrap up. This lesson is fabulous for an administrator observation, by the way. At the end you can either collect the worksheets, or if you’re doing notebooks have them fold it in half and glue or tape to a page. This is a great sheet to be able to look back at when they do their first research project. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Lesson 5: Search Better Rationale: Searching is such a critical skill by middle school, so this lesson is a great introduction to becoming better searchers. The lesson brings them to a learning module and has guiding questions in a Microsoft word document for them to complete. If you’re a google classroom, feel free to upload the document to share with your class. The questions really are right-there questions, but may take students a little practice to understand where and how to find the answers. Some students may not finish this during one class period. Answers: 1. The purpose of the video is to show some commonly used search features on Google. 2. To exclude words in a search, put a hyphen in front of the words you don’t want included. 3. The first three search results are usually advertisements and may not lead to the answer we are searching for. 4. The three questions to ask myself are: “When I run this search, what do I expect to appear? , When I find this answer, what do I expect it to look like? And When I click this link, what do I expect I will see? ” 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Lesson 6: Geek Speak Project Rationale: This lesson idea came from Kathy Schrock. If you haven’t found her online yet, she’s an awesome technology resource. She does this unit called “Geek Speak” where her students learn technology vocabulary. This lesson is my spin on it, but I borrowed her cute title. The lesson is both a vocabulary lesson and a chance to practice creating a one page document with text, images, and other features. You will want to think through how to assign the terms. I chose to have them use their classroom number. If you have more than 30 students then you will have to add a few. I provided an example for the term “handle” for the students to see. They can be as creative as they want as long as they follow the directions. If your school does rubrics then you could certainly add one. At the end of the lesson there is a spreadsheet to download for filling in the terms. In my class I had students take 1 minute to share their final poster. In my lab I have the Lanschool Software so I just put their screen on everyone else’s screen to save time. You could have them all upload theirs to a padlet and have a digital gallery walk to learn the terms and put them in their own words. I’m really just brainstorming now because there are so many ways to do this part 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Internet Safety Project (6 weeks) Rationale: Your students have spent years learning about digital citizenship and internet safety, plus it is time for a real research and collaborative project. By now your procedures should be set for independent and partner work, so start thinking about group work expectations and how to set a space for them to work collaboratively. The plan for this project is that there will be 8 groups taking one of the 8 different topics each. They will research and master the content and then create “lessons” as though they are going to teach them to younger students. I chose 2 nd grade because they can read by then and are more likely able to complete a worksheet or game. If you can pair up with some classes at your school, this would be an amazing learning experience for all. If not, then have your class present to each other. Decide how many learning activities you will require from each group. Ideas include videos, worksheets, vocabulary, games, movie, activities, posters, practice, quiz, puzzles, certificates, or something else that you can approve. About half way down the lesson page is a template and two rubrics. Check these out to see if you want to use them or create something different for your classes. The recommended websites are there for students, but a google search is a great place to go for information now that they are getting better at searching. Think through and talk to them about where to save their work each week because this is a long project. Ask them to think about what they will do to finish the project if they run out of class time. Plan ahead. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Internet Safety Lessons Rationale: The internet safety project was for review and because your students needed to research something. These internet safety topics are really important for them to learn at this age. The button near the top of the page brings the students to a video clip from common sense media. After they watch the video, they are answering some questions. The questions are designed to get them thinking about how to act when they are online. At my school by 5 th grade the students are starting to make some bad decisions and this lesson is a good reminder of the rules. At the bottom there is another button to a video if they have time. It is technically the “teacher” video on the topic, but I really like the way it was done and chose to share with students. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Scratch Lessons 9 -17 Rationale: Your students are going to LOVE this unit. Coding is becoming so common for intermediate students to learn. This unit makes it easy for students to progress through the Scratch program independently. The most important part about this unit is that they only download the lesson file the first time. After that they should access the workbook from their saved files to keep working on it. They have to answer questions in the workbook so they don’t want to start over with the blank one every time. The first day that I introduce scratch I have them all download the workbook and then I walk them through what the symbols on the pages mean. Point where the most important info is, etc. Then I let them get to it and basically just wander around for 8 weeks while they work through the projects. It might be your favorite part of the year, too. I had some students ask me if they could make an account. I decided that they could not make an account at school, but if they made an account at home with their parents, they could use the account during our class time. I didn’t want to deal with permission slips. I provided a rationale at the bottom of the lesson page for students to show their parents if their parents were curious about what Scratch is. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Screen Free Week Rationale: *This one can be found under the bonus tab Try to time this lesson to be a few weeks before the official screen free week so students can decide whether or not to participate (at home). The lesson is simple enough. Students explore the website and then answer some opinion questions. You could do a lot with the information gleaned from this lesson. You could have a class debate, you could have them write a persuasive essay, you could have them make a poster. Regardless of whether or not you do an extension activity, please do share the lesson reflections with the rest of the school and your students’ parents. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Animation Project- 2 Weeks Rationale: The Go Animate tool on ABCYa! Is so much fun and teaches great tech skills. I still use it to make animated GIFs to send to people (usually a cute “get well soon” or “great job”). This lesson is a 2 week project. The first week will really be spent taking the tutorial and playing around with the tool. Students will create an outdoor scene with any and all of the features provided. They will also save it as an animated gif. I recommend saving as the “small” version because the other options take a while to download. The second week they have creative freedom. You could integrate something they are learning in class for their custom animation. You will want to play around with the tool yourself because there are bound to be questions. Once they figure out how to duplicate the background successfully they will really be able to take off with it, but some will take a few tries to get the hang of it. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Make a… lessons Rationale: All of the Make a… lessons fit into the same lesson rationale. Students should be using what they have learned this year to MAKE digital products. By the end of these lessons students should have an impressive portfolio of skills and products. Some will be printable and would make a great end of year bulletin board. Each week take the time to play with the tool(s) that students will be required to use. This will ensure that you can answer the questions they have while working. These lessons are designed to be trial and error. At the end of every class either do an exit ticket or have a discussion about the features and shortcuts students discovered that class period. I use a padlet as my way of collecting assignments so that students can see each other’s work. I love for them to comment @ each other to give feedback when there is time. You can use another method of having them turn it in- whatever works for your school. I gave a prompt (in red text) for each assignment. Decide if these work for you or if you want to use something different and let your students know. 5 th Grade © Brittany Washburn
