Arithmetic Mean 4. 6
Turn & Talk Average
Learning Goal We are going to use our previous understanding of division so that we can find the average value of a group of data. We’ll know we’ve got it when we are able to analyze a group of data using arithmetic mean.
Vocabulary • Arithmetic mean • Data • Statistics
What is arithmetic mean? • It is the sum of a group set of numbers divided by the total number of parts in set • In statistics, we use arithmetic mean to analyze a group of data and for finding the average value • This can replace the individual data and distributes it evenly
How do we calculate arithmetic mean? • Calculate arithmetic mean by following 2 simple steps: 1. Add up all the data within a group 2. Divide the sum by the total number of data values
• • • Example 1: Average Number of Shots Taken Per Player Holly: 3/7 Marissa: 1/2 Ashley: 6/14 Hodan: 7/15 Maya: 0/1 Laura: 4/7 Ally: 2/5 Azzy: 2/4 Hanieh: 2/4 Sonia: 1/1 TOTAL: 28/50
Example 1: Average Number of Shots Taken Per Player • Team of 10 players • Made 28 of 50 shots
• • • Example 2: Calculating the Class Average S 1: 94% S 2: 62% S 3: 91% S 4: 77% S 5: 54% S 6: 79% S 7: 82% S 8: 61% S 9: 55% S 10: 49% • • • S 11: 72% S 12: 75% S 13: 66% S 14: 68% S 15: 71% S 16: 90% S 17: 83% S 18: 70% S 19: 81% S 20: 78% Class Average: 1 458 ÷ 20 = 72. 9%
