5 Common Classroom Strategies Consistency for 9 th Grade Learners
1. Be “On Time” • The learner is “on time” when he/she is seated and ready to begin class before the bell rings. • Should the learner fail to meet these expectations he/she will be marked late. 1. After the third late students should be referred to the Assistant Principal’s office and will be placed into the discipline system.
2. Be Prepared • Learners need to have all items necessary for class. • minimally should include such items as paper, pencils/pens, notebooks, textbooks, Agenda Books, and Hall Passes. • Students who are continually unprepared for class should receive a teacher detention.
Assignment Calendar • Some teachers have implemented the use of an assignment calendar. These calendars can be used to detail upcoming assignments, requirements, and other expectations. • While not mandatory, it is strongly suggested that all 9 th grade teachers implement this organizational tool. There can then be no excuses and no surprises on what is needed for class.
3. Pass Responsibility • Passes should only be given when absolutely necessary. • Passes should not be given to students during the first five minutes or the last five minutes of the period. • It is important that students learn the proper time to ask for a pass.
4. Be Respectful & Courteous • Teachers need to discuss with learners what is appropriate and inappropriate language/behavior in the classroom • Depending on the severity and number of occurrences, consequences can range from a teacher intervention, a teacher detention, or administrative referral.
1. The following is not acceptable in a learning environment: • • • Profane or obscene language Bullying or put-downs Racial or ethnic slurs Speech used to degrade or denigrate Sexual harassment Anything that may interfere with learning
Take advantage of these teachable moments • learner’s use of slang, improper grammar, tone, and volume. • areas of common courtesy, such as the appropriate time for raising hands, the appropriate time for moving in the class, and practicing good listening skills, just to name a few.
5. School Rules & Classroom Procedures • discuss any specific classroom rules • General guidelines can be discussed here as well as the referral process • overview school policy on food, drinks, dress code (including hats & hoods), and the use of electronic devices.
