SER and ESTAR both mean _____ to be am, is, are and conjugated means________ *There are different rules for each in regards to its use.

RULES FOR SER (to be am, is, are) Use Use to talk about characteristics that generally do not change for descriptions that are not about conditions or locations to talk about where people and things are from for talking about time For example: • who a person is or what a person is like: Teresa is my cousin and she is very funny → Teresa es mi prima y es muy graciosa. • what something is or what something is like: The tacos are my favorite food. They are extremely tasty. → Los tacos son mi comida favorita. Son riquísimos. • where a person or thing is from: My parents are from Mexico. → Mis padres son de México. The flowers are from my mom’s house. → Las flores son de la casa de mi mamá • telling time: It is seven in the morning. → Son las siete de la mañana. It is one in the afternoon → Es la una de la tarde.
RULES FOR ESTAR (to be am, is, are) Use to talk about situations that tend to change Use for location of people or things For example: • an accidental or acquired temporary condition: The tomato is green → El tomate está verde. • how a person feels: I am sick and he is tired. → Yo estoy enfermo y él está cansado. • where a person or thing is at: Where are the boys? They are in the gym → ¿Dónde están los chicos? Ellos están en el gimnasio. Where is the book? It is in the backpack. → ¿Dónde está el libro? Está en la mochila. • use with “now” and “today”: She is pretty today → Ella está bonita hoy. The tacos are good → Los tacos están buenos.
