Plato vs. Aristotle • Plato’s Republic (Perfect Society) was divided into 3 levels: – Gold (guardians) “philosopher king”, rulers who used philosophy- knew the truth and used to it rule wisely. Should always have power! – Silver (Auxiliaries) warriors and people of strength – Bronze (artisans) common producers such as farmers and builders • Plato believed all men and women could serve at all levels. Aristotle thought men were tops. • Plato’s mistrust of democracy may have resulted from Socrates’ death.

Plato vs. Aristotle • Aristotle believed: Locking people into 3 classes was dangerous, rigid, and led to unhappiness of some classes. (Gold could never be Bronze. ) Some people could rise to better positions or fall because of their abilities. People needed to participate in democracy but it was better than Plato’s government.
