King Henry wanted to divorce his wife Catherine and marry Anne Boleyn (he needed a son) He formed the Church of England (Anglican Church) and made himself head of the Church Not everyone liked Henry’s new church… 2/7 Puritans-wanted “purification” of the new church--

A small group known as “separatists” left England went to Holland. They felt their children were becoming too Dutch and wanted to find a new haven and sought to establish a settlement in the “New World. ”

B. When they made the journey, they became known as Pilgrims… üSail on MAYFLOWER üTraveled 65 Days, arrive off-course (1620) üOnly half of 102 are actually separatists. üOne died at sea, one was born “Oceanus” üDid not originally land at Plymouth Rock. SQUANTO Squanto, a Patuxet Indian, had been kidnapped and taken to Europe (twice) where he learned English. His tribe had been wiped out by disease while he was gone… He taught them how to plant corn… SQUANTO worked out peace treaty between the local natives and the Pilgrims…it lasted for a while, anyway…
