Thank you for downloading! Are you a new technology teacher? You’re going to love your new teaching assignment if you are. Been around a while? These lesson plans and activities will save you so much time and renew your love for all things teaching tech. If you haven’t yet, start with the video in your folder. That will be a great introduction to how these lesson plans and rationale pages work. In these lessons, I link to dozens of websites. If a website stops working (permanently) please let me know and I will replace it with an alternative. There is a “bug report” form on the Teachers page of the site. This download gives ONLY you and your students permission to use the website linked in the lesson plans. Please also be sure that you are only using these lessons with the number of classes for which you purchased licenses. If your colleague wants to use these lessons, you can help him/her out by purchasing discounted licenses. To purchase another license, click on the “My Purchases” tab on your Tp. Setup You may or may not choose to print these lesson plans. If your administrator requires paper plans, then you can customize the lesson plan pages to be what you need and print them out. Option 1: 3 ring binder. I did my best to save a little extra room on both sides of every page so you can put in 3 hole punches. If you have a double sided printer then it works really nicely to have the rationale page on one side and the lesson plan for the next lesson on the other side. That way when you have the binder open you’re looking at one lesson at a time. Option 2: Binding. If you have a binding machine you will LOVE using it for these lesson plans. It makes it so easy to carry around. If you have a double sided printer then it is less than 40 pieces of paper. Kindergarten © Brittany Washburn
Setup Your account gives you access to specific pages on the site. To access the pages, go to the STUDENTS page of the website, (k 5 technologycurriculum. com, or k 5 tech. net for the short version) log in, and choose the lesson from the menu. *Note, : K, 1, and 2 have a click-through page with numbered links instead of the drop-down. Just click the grade level name twice. Need your username changed? I have do to that manually. Email me (info@brittanywashburn) with 2 options for your new username. Setup Honestly, you won’t really even need to “plan” anymore with this resource. Just double check that you understand the lesson (so that you can provide tech support to students) and customize the lesson plan for yourself. Done! It took me years of teaching in the computer lab to put these lessons together and I am so happy to be able to share them with other teachers. Within my scope and sequence, I saved a little wiggle room for extenuating circumstances in your schedule. Snow days, field trips, and state testing get us off schedule all the time. I’ve never been able to complete a full 40 weeks with any grade level. FAQ: Q: Some of the websites ask for a username and password but my school doesn’t have an account. How do I use them? A: You might have to skip some of the activities if you don’t have a school account. Just let students know to disregard that part. Q: How can I get my students onto the website quickly? A: Options- 1. Have the page linked to your school website (or whatever website is the home page when your students open the browser). 2. Make a desktop shortcut on each computer that goes directly to k 5 technologycurriculum. com. 3. Use a software like Lanschool to push the link out to your students. 4. Bookmark the URL on the browser. *Choose a super easy username and password when you register. Kindergarten © Brittany Washburn

First Day in Tech Lesson 1 Rationale: The first day in the tech lab will be full of procedures, getting the login right, finding their way to the website, etc. so the lesson itself should be review and should be short and sweet. The beginning activity has students begin what I call a “google log” where they keep a weekly journal of their search practice. I started doing this a few years ago and I am amazed by how much more skilled they are with just a bit of practice. If there any questions you want to change as the weeks go by, just make sure to let your students know. The bulk of the lesson is to type up the computer lab rules. They worked in the past on learning their way around a word processor so this should be review. They can get creative with the colors and fonts. Most of the students won’t have time to finish the lesson. At the end of the lesson there is a link for what to do if they finish early. If you have something you prefer, just let them know ahead of time. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Lesson 2 Vocabulary Review Rationale: The second time your 4 th graders are working in the computer lab, be sure to establish an entrance procedure. I like to start with about 10 minutes of keyboarding at the beginning of every session. This makes the transition so smooth and within a few months they are pretty efficient typers. I put a timer up on my Smart. Board, but you could use anything you have to mark the time. If you’re doing the google log, day 2 is the most challenging because they won’t know how to get to their saved file (even though they learned to do this!). It might be a good thing to go over before they all start working. After they complete their google log, there are technology vocabulary activities to complete. Anyone who didn’t finish the assignment from last week could work on it during this time. This doesn’t seem like much for the lesson, but it gives you plenty of time to remind everyone of procedures and rules. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Technology Vocabulary Typing Rationale: Why not teach both keyboarding and technology vocabulary together? That was my rationale for creating these activities. Feel free to choose just a few of the sets for your 4 th grade students to complete. Ideally, you will have them spend a class or two getting started on these and then you will have them as a go-to for sub plans, early finishers, unexpected schedule changes, etc. If you’re a Microsoft classroom, these will download as Power. Point and work perfectly. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Geek Speak Intro Rationale: There are 30 technology terms for you to assign. I used my student’s classroom number. If you have more than 30 students in a class then you will need to come up with a few more words. Check out the Power. Point template at the bottom to see how the foldable activity is set up. Students will be making their own challenge with their assigned term. If you’re able to print these out, it makes a really great activity with a set of i. Pod touches or i. Pads. I’ve even used these foldables with 3 rd graders to introduce them to some of the terms. This lesson might take 2 weeks to complete, it just depends on your students. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Internet Safety Module (5 weeks) Rationale: If you haven’t seen common sense media’s internet safety modules then you’re in for a real treat. There is some teacher setup required for this project. You need to make your students accounts. It is a bit of work ahead of time but then it is smooth sailing for 5 weeks. I chose to use my student’s school number as their username and password to make things as simple as possible Each week the students are responsible for completing one module and then answering a question about it. The modules are color coded so it makes it easy to let students know which one to complete that week. If you don’t use the padlet for your students to put in their answers, they could do it on your class website or in a notebook. I love to have the students respond @ each other on the padlet with if they agree or disagree and why. If students finish early, have them do some “sponge activities. ” I use the term that Kathy Schrock coined and it is just a page full of links to quick activities. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

How to Read a Webpage Rationale: Have your students keyboard for the first 10 minutes of class. Then, introduce the lesson for today. They are going to be using a website that has learning modules for the next few weeks. This first introductory lesson is all about the parts of a web page. The vocabulary should be a review from last year. If you haven’t started yet, the terms that your students are coming across in these lessons should go on a word wall somewhere in your classroom. The word wall can be digital, but research shows that word walls work best when they are at least partially student created and always visible. The learning module for this lesson is called “How to Read a Webpage. ” and has basic information about what websites look like and how to navigate them. At the end there is a “Try This!” activity. If you’re doing paper journals or notebooks, have students answer the questions there. If you’re fully paperless, you can have students enter the answers on your class website, in your learning management system, or with a partner in class. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

All About Online Search Rationale: Starting this lesson there are digital worksheets to go along with the learning module. Show students where to click to download them and how to save their finished work to their network folder (or somewhere they can get back to it). The learning module for this lesson is called “All About Online Search. ” I found that students really had no idea of some of the strategies for searching and evaluating information they found online. It led to some great conversations in class about how anyone can create websites and they aren’t always reliable for research and information. If you use google classroom, feel free to upload the worksheets to share with your students that way. Or print them out if you would rather have them do it on paper. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. Answer Key: 1. Answers may vary- use advanced search, try different keywords, etc. 2. Keywords are better to use than a full question because it lines up with how search engines work. If you put in a question the search engine has to filter out some words and that may make the results incorrect. 3. The default search engine in internet explorer is Bing. 4. Another term for bookmarking is “save to favorites” or “favorite. ” 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Search Engine Strategies Rationale: Starting this lesson there are digital worksheets to go along with the learning module. Show students where to click to download them and how to save their finished work to their network folder (or somewhere they can get back to it). The learning module for this lesson is called “Search Engines and Strategies” and it has some great information for students to learn. My students were blown away by some of the strategies they learned in this module and now they use them all the time. If you use google classroom, feel free to upload the worksheets to share with your students that way. Or print them out if you would rather have them do it on paper. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. Answer Key: 1. We type keywords in a search bar. Together they are called a query. 2. The advertisements on Google are usually the first three links. 3. When you use quotation marks on a search engine it means you want to see those words together in the results. 4. A specialized search means you are using Boolean search strategies or advanced search strategies. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Google Search Tips Rationale: Starting this lesson there are digital worksheets to go along with the learning module. Show students where to click to download them and how to save their finished work to their network folder (or somewhere they can get back to it). The learning module for this lesson is called “Search Better” and it has includes more in-depth searching techniques than the previous lesson. If you use google classroom, feel free to upload the worksheets to share with your students that way. Or print them out if you would rather have them do it on paper. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. Answer Key: 1. The purpose of the video is to show some commonly used search features on Google. 2. To exclude words in a search, put a hyphen in front of the words you don’t want included. 3. The first three search results are usually advertisements and may not lead to the answer we are searching for. 4. The three questions to ask myself are: “When I run this search, what do I expect to appear? , When I find this answer, what do I expect it to look like? And When I click this link, what do I expect I will see? ” 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Judging Online Information Rationale: Starting this lesson there are digital worksheets to go along with the learning module. Show students where to click to download them and how to save their finished work to their network folder (or somewhere they can get back to it). The learning module for this lesson is called “Judging Online Information. ” It is the introduction to the next few lessons on looking at a website critically to decide if it is good, reliable information to use for research or to find answers. If you use google classroom, feel free to upload the worksheets to share with your students that way. Or print them out if you would rather have them do it on paper. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. Answer Key: 1. Unbiased sources are usually news organizations and encyclopedias. 2. It is important to use a source that is current because then you will have the right version of the information. 3. The answers will vary, but hopefully students come to the conclusion that it is a fake, or hoax, website and the information is incorrect. 4. The information about Wikipedia is a warning to use the site with caution because anyone can add or edit information on the pages. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Evaluate A Webpage Practice Rationale: Starting this lesson there are digital worksheets to go along with the learning module. Show students where to click to download them and how to save their finished work to their network folder (or somewhere they can get back to it). The learning module for this lesson is called “Evaluate a webpage practice. ” It is a guided practice activity for comparing websites. There are two websites for students to review and compare. If you use google classroom, feel free to upload the worksheets to share with your students that way. Or print them out if you would rather have them do it on paper. If they finish early, have them go to the Sponge Activities or the linked activities at the bottom of the page for the remainder of your time. Answer Key: 1. Both of the websites are about astronauts landing on the moon. The first one is trying to say it was a hoax while the second website is trying to prove it isn’t a hoax. 2. The first website doesn’t list an author. The NASA website’s author is a Dr. so that makes him seem more credible. 3. Both sites use outside links and ideas to support their claims. 4. I think the NASA site is more reliable because their facts and story seem to have more evidence and the website has better contact information. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Website Evaluation Activity Rationale: Have your students keyboard for the first 10 minutes of class. Then, introduce the lesson for today. There are 8 websites to evaluate and a worksheet that goes along with it. Assign students one of the 8 websites to use to answer the worksheet questions. The websites are linked but I chose to show the whole URL instead of the site title so that they can see the. com, . org, etc. and start to build an understanding of the differences. It is up to you whether this is a small group or individual activity. I’ve done it both ways and prefer that they fill in the worksheet independently. It is fun to have them group up after they evaluated their website to see if the other people with the same website came to the same conclusion, so if you have time at the end it is a great way to wrap up. This lesson is fabulous for an administrator observation, by the way. At the end you can either collect the worksheets, or if you’re doing notebooks have them fold it in half and glue or tape to a page. This is a great sheet to be able to look back at when they do their first research project. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Putting Information Together Rationale: After all of the lessons learning about how to critically evaluate a website, it is time to think about putting the knowledge into action. This lesson walks through how to synthesize the gathered information into a useful format. If you can get your hands on a copy of the picture book version of What Do You Do With an Idea? That is always how I start this lesson. We have several copies of it in the school media center so I’ve asked a student from each class to check out the book and prepare to read it to the class. (This is a great lesson for an observation) The learning module for this lesson is called “Putting Information Together. ” It is full of tips and advice for organizing research and putting it into your own words. Answers: 1. The four tips for organizing your thoughts are plan ahead, start an outline, record your ideas, and bookmark your sources. 2. Synthesize means to combine ideas into one new idea. 3. Avoiding Plagiarism Rationale: The next step in the thought process is how to avoid plagiarizing someone else’s work. Start the class with a discussion to see what they already know on the topic and let them know they will be learning much more about it with this lesson. The learning module for this lesson is called “Avoiding Plagiarism. ” This lesson gives examples so that students can see what is and what is not plagiarism and then gives 4 tips for avoiding plagiarism in their own work. Answers: 1. Dave should have provided a link to the site because he used the other person’s wording and idea without giving credit. 2. It is ok to use quotation marks when you want to say exactly what the other person said and you’re going to give them credit. 3. When you put information into your own words you need to remember to synthesize the information to make a new idea, not just change a few words. 4. Copyright and Fair Use Rationale: Now that students know how to find information and how to synthesize it into their own new ideas, we need to talk about copyright and fair use. My experience is that students at this age really don’t know that there are laws about how to use parts of other people’s works in your own original work. This lesson explains the laws. The learning module for this lesson is called “Copyright and Fair Use. ” There is a great infographic on the first page that might be good to hang in your classroom during this unit. It shows the different symbols for traditional copyright, creative commons, and public domain. Answers: 1. When you have permission to use something that is copyrighted it is called a license. 2. I can use public domain and creative commons websites to find free content. 3. If you use copyrighted material without giving proper credit, your work can be taken away or you can get sued. 4. Intro to Publisher (Research Project) Rationale: This project is optional, but my students absolutely love it and I collaborated with the classroom teachers to give it extra value (it was a class grade). Not many people learn about Microsoft Publisher, but it is a great tool for making a one page graphic. The topic of our research is “Rocks and Minerals” but in your state the science standards may be different. If you choose another topic for them to study, just be sure to let the students know the category titles for the boxes. The research and completion of the page in publisher took my students about a month each time we did this project. Plan ahead for what to do if they don’t finish it within class time. One year because of snow days I had to arrange with the classroom teacher for 2 extra sessions of computer lab time. The video directions show to use the tools in Publisher. All of the pages will come out a little different, and that is the fun of it. During their research, commend them for using the research strategies they learned. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

This unit makes it easy for students to progress through the Scratch program independently. The most important part about this unit is that they only download the lesson file the first time. After that they should access the workbook from their saved files to keep working on it. They have to answer questions in the workbook so they don’t want to start over with the blank one every time. The first day that I introduce scratch I have them all download the workbook and then I walk them through what the symbols on the pages mean. Point out how they know if they have a question to answer, where the most important info is, etc. Then I let them get to it and basically just wander around for 8 weeks while they work through the projects. It might be your favorite part of the year, too. I had some students ask me if they could make an account. I decided that they could not make an account at school, but if they made an account at home with their parents, they could use the account during our class time. I didn’t want to deal with permission slips. I provided a rationale at the bottom of the lesson page for students to show their parents if their parents were curious about what Scratch is. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Make a Web Page Rationale: If you haven’t reached the end of your school year yet, this is a great lesson to have right at the end. It is a very simple learning module, but gives students an introduction to HTML and students usually think that is really cool. The lesson is simple enough, students just follow the module and the directions guide them to the outcome. If you have students that are really into it, have them practice making their own with the skills they learned. 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn

Extras Rationale: Throughout the school year when I find fun, educational content to share I will add it to the Holidays or Bonus tabs of the site. There won’t be lesson plans to go with these, but if you follow me on Facebook or are part of my Technology Teacher Tribe Facebook Group, that is where I announce that I have added something to the sites. Consider these extras mostly early-finisher ideas instead of full lessons. © Brittany Washburn
Power. Point Project 4 Week Unit Rationale: This is a 4 part unit on Power. Point and the page is set up differently than the other units. Point Reminders Module. Students will watch the video and complete the example template that goes along with the video. They will learn about word art and shapes. Week 2: The video is the directions. I show to layer shapes and work with them to create an image. Their assignment is to choose any clip art graphic of an animal and recreate it using layered shapes. Week 3: Using Power. Point templates, students will create a certificate or award. The video gives the directions. Week 4: Students will be creating a Power. Point using the guided template. You may choose for them to turn this in to both you and their classroom teacher at the end for a grade. *Forewarning that students found some not so appropriate images on google so make sure safe search is on. Idioms all have a literal definition and I suppose the lesson was learned! 4 th Grade © Brittany Washburn
