Why? • I did this to point out some parallels with meth. 1. These aren’t stupid people who are unemployed with nothing else to do. In fact they are among the most intelligent, athletically fit, and otherwise careful people. 2. Forbidding it won’t help. When they made it illegal, people did it even more – by considering it furtive and a challenge. 3. “Education doesn’t always help. These people fully knew the risks. • The answer: They wanted to feel alive. • So the real answer to meth is to look at what is missing in life and point to better ways of doing this. • In the past, life was dangerous and exciting enough. • --young men went to war, • --women had children (an equally dangerous activity. ) • Adventure sports and other activities might substitute for “not feeling alive” 8
