Secondary Coverage Terms Communication In: (CB to LB) routes go IN “check/ Pass” WR on to the next LB Out: (LB to CB) Route goes out towards Sideline LB “checks/ Pass” on to CB Deep: (CB/ LB to Safety) route goes deep and CB sees/ hears short CB “checks/ passes” WR on to Safeties and CB drops to attacks short route. Short: (CB & LB) LB or CB see short route and attacks short route. Middle: (LB & Safeties) : LB are calling for help from the Safeties to look to the middle Tango: (Safeties & CB’s) Safety sees out when in man calls “Tango” and takes deep route, CB take short route. Banjo: (Backer to Backer) Alerts Backers to help when they blitz. Combo: (LB & CB) Alerts CB that backer or corner is going and needs help in coverage. KILL: (All Secondary & LB’s) When a blitz is on and there is a motion we check to Base Red, and blitz is off.
Secondary Rules of Thumb ● ● If WR route Comes in, Another WR route will always come out. In Man we turn with the WR (back to QB) and watch eyes. In Zone we keep WR in front and Break on the ball once its thrown. Corners: If we recognize RUN we play from the sidelines in

Keys to Success
Pre-snap Keys
Keys to look for ● WR/ RB Stance: are they ready to sprint, or kinds of just standing there ● WR Splits: are they trying to spread the LBs thin ● Qb’s Drop: 3 step short/ quick pass, 5 step deep long pass ● ● RB eyes: Is the RB looking all over the place searching for a hole in the defense? O-line stance: where is their weight on their hand coming after you or sitting back as if to pass block ● Is the o-line communicating a lot or a little? ● A lot usually means run play
How to effectively watch film
Effectively watch film ● Actually watch the game (Not yourself)- Sometimes you can learn from what other people do Correctly and do incorrectly ● Watch your position whether your on or off the field. ● Watch for opponents tendencies (ex Always running to strength) ● Know 2 or 3 plays they can run from each formation ● Do players tip off the play: do they only run to a specific athletes side ● Who is their best athlete? ● Who are their Playmakers? (Best WR, RB, Linemen) ● What hand is the QB? ● Who is the QBs favorite target ● Does the RB run between the tckels or try to get outside?
