3 Types of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, Pathos RHETORICAL STRATEGIES: Rhetoric (n) - the art of speaking or writing effectively or persuasively • What does it mean to persuade? • (verb) to convince by appealing to reason or understanding • Ethos: THINK OF THE WORD ETHICS • Refers to the trustworthiness of the speaker/writer • If you trust the speaker/author, you are more likely to listen to what he or she has to say • Based on a writer’s tone • What it is: Personal Appeal • How it Works: Based on the persona of the writer

" • “You’re a smart person, so I know you’ll want to buy my product” • Academic arguments rely more on logos. Why? • Can also be the facts and statistics used to help support the argument. • What it is: Logical Appeal • How it Works: Uses facts

3 Types of Persuasion: Ethos, Logos, Pathos: THINK OF THE WORD, PATHETIC (emotions) • Pathos is related to the words pathetic, sympathy, and empathy. • Whenever you accept any claim based on how it makes you feel without fully analyzing the rationale behind the claim, you are acting on pathos. • Often includes vivid and emotional language, and sensory details • What it is: Emotional Appeal • How it Works: Tugs at the feelings of the audience
