Thank you for downloading! Are you a new technology teacher? You’re going to love your new teaching assignment if you are. Been around a while? These lesson plans and activities will save you so much time and renew your love for all things teaching tech. If you haven’t yet, start with the video in your folder. That will be a great introduction to how these lesson plans and rationale pages work. In these lessons, I link to dozens of websites. If a website stops working (permanently) please let me know and I will replace it with an alternative. There is a “bug report” form on the Teachers page of the site. This download gives ONLY you and your students permission to use the website linked in the lesson plans. Please also be sure that you are only using these lessons with the number of classes for which you purchased licenses. If your colleague wants to use these lessons, you can help him/her out by purchasing discounted licenses. To purchase another license, click on the “My Purchases” tab on your Tp. Setup You may or may not choose to print these lesson plans. If your administrator requires paper plans, then you can customize the lesson plan pages to be what you need and print them out. Option 1: 3 ring binder. I did my best to save a little extra room on both sides of every page so you can put in 3 hole punches. If you have a double sided printer then it works really nicely to have the rationale page on one side and the lesson plan for the next lesson on the other side. That way when you have the binder open you’re looking at one lesson at a time. Option 2: Binding. If you have a binding machine you will LOVE using it for these lesson plans. It makes it so easy to carry around. If you have a double sided printer then it is less than 40 pieces of paper. Kindergarten © Brittany Washburn
Setup Your account gives you access to specific pages on the site. To access the pages, go to the STUDENTS page of the website, (k 5 technologycurriculum. com, or k 5 tech. net for the short version) log in, and choose the lesson from the menu. *Note, : K, 1, and 2 have a click-through page with numbered links instead of the drop-down. Just click the grade level name twice. Need your username changed? I have do to that manually. Email me (info@brittanywashburn) with 2 options for your new username. Setup Honestly, you won’t really even need to “plan” anymore with this resource. Just double check that you understand the lesson (so that you can provide tech support to students) and customize the lesson plan for yourself. Done! It took me years of teaching in the computer lab to put these lessons together and I am so happy to be able to share them with other teachers. Within my scope and sequence, I saved a little wiggle room for extenuating circumstances in your schedule. Snow days, field trips, and state testing get us off schedule all the time. I’ve never been able to complete a full 40 weeks with any grade level. FAQ: Q: Some of the websites ask for a username and password but my school doesn’t have an account. How do I use them? A: You might have to skip some of the activities if you don’t have a school account. Just let students know to disregard that part. Q: How can I get my students onto the website quickly? A: Options- 1. Have the page linked to your school website (or whatever website is the home page when your students open the browser). 2. Make a desktop shortcut on each computer that goes directly to k 5 technologycurriculum. com. 3. Use a software like Lanschool to push the link out to your students. 4. Bookmark the URL on the browser. *Choose a super easy username and password when you register. Kindergarten © Brittany Washburn

First Day in Technology Rationale: The first day in the tech lab will be full of procedures, getting the login right, finding their way to the website, etc. so the lesson itself should be review and should be short and sweet. The first part of the lesson is a Computer Lab Rules Poster and a Padlet with a question for students to answer. If you have a Smart. Board or a projector, you could do this part of the lesson together. The second part is some computer vocabulary games to review the terms they should have learned in previous years. Finally, there is a brief video clip about Internet Safety for Kids and is just meant to be a reminder about the rules of using the internet. A true internet safety unit comes later. At the end of the lesson there is a link for what to do if they finish early. If you have something you prefer, just let them know ahead of time. 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Word Processing 1 -5 Rationale: In 3 rd grade we really jump right into the content. This Word Processing unit will teach your students everything they need to know to be efficient word processors, and even get a little creative. The first lesson includes a video by me of how to navigate the website with the learning modules. Each lesson contains an image and a link to access the learning module. Within the learning modules themselves is another link to a downloadable template. Students will follow along with the learning module and complete the guided activities each week. Since everyone has a different version of the software, I linked to all of the tutorials. Find the one you need and teach your students to look for it. I have explicit permission from GCF Learn free to use these resources in this way and to provide you with licenses to use them with your students. I do not own the content. Microsoft Word Typing with a Purpose Rationale: I included a video of directions with this lesson because it is a new idea for the students. This lesson asks them to make up a story and type it. Even though they have been working on learning the tools in Microsoft Word, they haven’t been using it for typing up their own original creations. I teamed up with the 3 rd grade teachers at my school to turn this into an ELA assignment that would be graded and put into their portfolios. If you decide to use a different writing prompt, just be sure to let the students know what your expectations are for their writing. This may take some students multiple sessions. *No, I don’t currently have a version of this for Google Docs, but your students could certainly open a blank Doc and complete the activity. 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Internet Safety 1 -6 Rationale: Most grade levels get a set of related Internet Safety lessons that build on each other. For 3 rd grade I decided that we are going to compare Internet Safety programs by several different creators to see what they all have in common. Each week students will learn about Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship from a different perspective. Week 1: Share Jumper Video and Game • Watch the video and play the game. Nothing else to do this week. The game may be frustrating to some who are not skilled at using the keyboard arrows Week 2 and 3: Online Communication- email • If the links don’t work for the activities, you can use the programs on your computer (paint for the draw about it, Word for the Talk about it and Write about it) This assignment is meant to take 2 weeks to complete Week 4: Router’s Birthday Surprise • Interactive video module. Students follow the prompts in the video to keep going through it. Week 5: The Smart Crew & Compare and Contrast with Router’s Birthday Surprise Activity • I made a video of directions for this one. Students watch The Smart Crew video and then use the template to compare and contrast. Week 6: Internet Safety Test (answers will vary- essay response) 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Typing Olympics Rationale: You probably noticed how painful it is to watch your 3 rd graders type. This bootcamp will really help them learn where the keys are and speed them up. There is a video of directions for how to take the typing test, where to put their weekly data, and how to do the practice activities. Watch it and decide if you want to direct them to do it the same way. For some reason I really enjoy the sound of typing so is always like my zen time in my classroom. They will definitely have trouble with the log (finding it again each week to add to it) so be prepared to help them troubleshoot that part. I’ve never really been a stickler for perfect hand position because now we use so many different types of devices and you can’t always have all of your fingers on the home row keys (touchscreens). As long as they are not hunting and pecking, this unit is really about getting more comfortable with where everything is on the keyboard. I do make them sit up straight, though! 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

MS Excel/ Google Sheets Lessons 1 -3 Rationale: Excel and Sheets are programs that most teachers shy away from because they don’t always understand it themselves. These lessons are an introduction to how to navigate in Excel/Sheets. Your students will be able to make and edit a chart and make and edit a graph using data from a chart by the end of the three lessons. Each week has video directions and a template to download. Watch the videos and download the templates to make sure they are what you want to use. If you change any of the instructions be sure to let your students know the new expectations. Week 1: Fill in a chart. Since this is probably most of their first experience with Excel you can expect them to be frustrated with it. The boxes are not like Word and Power. Point and it takes a minute to get the hang of it. Week 2: Make a graph. Using a template, students will make a simple graph of the data. Watch the video yourself so you can know how to help them when they get stuck. If you don’t highlight the cells just right then the graph ends up blank. Week 3: Create your own. This one requires students to poll each other. I made that bold because it will be noisy and different from the norm. They really love making their own chart and graph though so it is totally worth the few minutes of chaos. This might be a good one for an observation! 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Learn about Search Engines Rationale: Searching is such an important skill for students to practice. This lesson is an introduction to how search engines work. There is a video of directions for students for how to fill in the digital KWL chart and what to do with their information. The video clip is on a different web site and the link takes them directly to it. Students will probably “Know” that a search engine brings up answers to the questions we have. They will probably “want” to know how it works. It is really fun at the end to gather the things they “learn” because it should be a whole lot! Some students will have this lesson done quickly but others will take the whole time and still not be finished. The early finishers can do the Sponge Activities until time is up. 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Internet Search 1 and 2 Rationale: Now that students have an idea of how a search engine works, it is time to put the idea into practice by learning about keywords and search strategies. Week 1: Practice Searching Online. There is a video of directions for completing this activity. Early finishers can do sponge activities. Week 2: Understanding Google Search. This lesson is so cool if it comes out correctly. Students actually get a chance to practice searching and make a chart of their results as they narrow down their search by adding more keywords. The video gives the directions for completing this assignment. 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn

Extras Rationale: Throughout the school year when I find fun, educational content to share I will add it to the Holidays or Bonus tabs of the site. There won’t be lesson plans to go with these, but if you follow me on Facebook or are part of my Technology Teacher Tribe Facebook Group, that is where I announce that I have added something to the sites. Consider these extras mostly early-finisher ideas instead of full lessons. 3 r Grade © Brittany Washburn
