3. INVESTIGATE A CONTEMPORARY ISSUE WHICH ILLUSTRATES THE PROMOTION AND/OR ENFORCEMENT OF HUMAN RIGHTS INVESTIGATE a contemporary human rights issue and EVALUATE the effectiveness of legal and non-legal responses to the issue Human Trafficking and Slavery
In very basic terms: Human Trafficking can be any action that leads to someone being used as a slave (forced labour, sexual slavery, etc).
Human Trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring OR receipt of persons by means of the THREAT of force or USE of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability … to achieve the consent of a person having purpose of exploitation. control over another person for the ‘Exploitation’ includes, at a minimum, the exploitation of: the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery or servitude. From the UN’s Palermo Protocol 2000
MYTHS AND MISCONCEPTIONS about HT (from the NGO, the Polaris Project (2009)) Human Trafficking - is not people smuggling People smuggling example: A person wants to leave their country to enter another one without following the regular procedures (e. g. getting a visa). The person pays an agent to transport them across the border secretly. Usually once the payment is made, and the person gets to their destination, the relationship is over and the smuggled person is free to go. - does not require crossing any borders or transportation - does not require physical force, abuse or restraint It’s also IRRELEVANT whether or not the person consented or was paid
Questions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Define Human Trafficking. (slide 2) What are the different forms of HT? (slide 3) How is HT different from people smuggling? (slide 4) How large is the extent of the problem? (not in slides, in readings, accessed at http: //humanrightsuhsmraziz. weebly. com/uploads/7/6/3/0/76303457/img 303084719 -0001. pdf (2 nd page 2 nd paragraph) In the same readings as above, what does Anne Gallagher, an academic involved with the UN, say about the extent of the issue? (see end of 2 nd page) What is the trafficking protocol? http: //humanrightsuhsmraziz. weebly. com/uploads/7/6/3/0/76303457/img 303084719 -0001. pdf 3 rd page) Extension: In the second last paragraph page 7 at http: //humanrightsuhsmraziz. weebly. com/uploads/7/6/3/0/76303457/img 303084719 -0001. pdf, why should HT be treated as a HR issue rather than just a criminal issue?
