+ The News About the News is Grim n Everyday the outlook for news is poor n Thousands of media jobs lost since last year n Hundreds laid-off at Gannett in December alone; the media giant said it would eliminate about 2000 jobs across its 85 daily publications, not counting USA Today and the Detroit Free Press, which is rumored to go completely online. n Last week Gannett announced a second round of furloughs for all employees. n Mc. Clatchy is seeking to sell the Miami Herald and Scripps has closed the Rocky Mountain News. n The Tribune Company has filed for bankruptcy as has the Minneapolis Star Tribune n In March, both the Journal Register Co. and the company that owns the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philly Daily News filed for bankruptcy.
+ The Grim News Continues n The Hearst Company, owners of the San Francisco Chronicle, announced in March that it will seek massive job cuts or sell the paper. The latest idea? Turn it into a nonprofit. n The New York Times Company threatened to close the Boston Globe. Only massive union concessions saved the paper n The Seattle paper ceased publication in early March; the Tucson Citizen was spared the chopping block the same week and is now an online publication only. n Google abandoned its print ad program earlier this year because the company wasn’t making enough money n Gannett, the largest US newspaper chain, announced in February hat it was slashing its quarterly dividend from 40 cents per share to four cents per share to help pay down its debt.
+ Broadcast Picture n Better for local broadcast news with 17. 9 % of News Directors predicting staff increases over the next year, though slightly more than 9% predicted decreases. The majority, 72 percent said staffs would stay the same (RTNDA) n Local newspapers are teaming with local TV stations to stay afloat and get the news out. n NBC Universal slashed 1, 350 jobs earlier this year, including 500 at NBC. n Viacom cut 850 jobs, or about 7% of its workforce, including at BET and BET. com. MTV took the biggest hit. That follows the 1 percent workforce reduction at CBS. n Most of us in media have friends who are out of work and no prospects for future employment

City Attorney advised politicians to stay off Facebook until the laws become clearer – whether anything posted to Facebook would be subject to public record retention laws. n In October 2008, the Arizona’s AG approved online school board meetings for Camp Verde. Viewers and members of the public would be able to comment by e-mail. Camp Verde Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Van Handel sought an opinion from Attorney General Terry Goddard on whether a computer program allowing Web users to watch in real time as school board officials revise public documents would fall within the scope of the law (Arizona Republic). Goddard's opinion said that if certain conditions were in place, such as proper notice given to the public, free computers made available at libraries and final approval of the documents reached only at traditional public meetings, the online program would be lawful.
