Kinetic Energy Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. Potential Energy Potential energy is energy stored for use at a later time. Examples are the following: • water at the top of a dam • a compressed spring • chemical bonds in gasoline, coal, or food The water at the top of a dam has potential energy by virtue of its position.
