3. 3 Morphemes, stems and syllables The table in the previous page shows the 20 words from the switchboard lexicon and their splitting into constituent morphemes. Also shown for some words, are the syllables that make up the word pronunciation. It can be seen that there is no relation between the syllables and the morphemes. For instance, the word dogs can be morphologically split into “stem dog + plural s”, while it is a singlesyllable word. Morphemes tell us how the word is derived from its stem (lexical information) while syllables tell us the way a word is pronounced (acoustic). ECE 7000 Natural Language Processing Page 1 of 1
