3. 2 Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE)

Definition • Coefficient: numeric factor that is being multiplied by the variable. Example: -3 x -3 ½y ½

The Multiplication Property of Equality For all rational numbers a, b , and c If a = b, then ac = bc • You can multiply the same number by both sides. • When you multiply by the reciprocal it is the same as dividing.

To solve an equation like 8 x = 96 • Goal: need to isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign. • How: do the opposite operation of what is being done to the variable. • Why: by doing the opposite operation it will make the coefficient of x “ 1”. • Rule: whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other.
