Planning & Schedule l Changes since April 2007 ð end 2007 run at 900 Ge. V has been replaced by mid 2008 run at full energy l Additional time used for: ð repair of pixel detector (as announced in April) ð production & installation of further modules: µ TOF (7 ->17 or 18) µ TRD (2 ->5) µ PHOS (1 ->3) ð take more time for testing and pre-commissioning of individual systems ð add more cosmic running for global commissioning and initial alignment l Expected start-up configuration mid 2008 complete: ITS, TPC, TOF, HMPID, muon arm, PMD, trigger dets (V 0, T 0, ZDC, Acorde), . . µ partially complete: PHOS(3/5), TRD (5/18), DAQ/HLT (20 -30%) µ l Beyond 2008 4 ð complete DAQ/HLT capacity (shifted from 2008 to 2009) in line with expected LHC running ð complete modular detectors: TRD (2009), PHOS (2010), EMCAL (2010/11) 24/10/2007 23 rd RRB J. Summary ITS Installation l went essentially smooth w/o major incident or hick-up ð major effort involving many different groups, over several months ð lots of smaller problems discovered & solved µ cooling commissioning, cable & connector problems, positioning & alignment, software/firmware/hardware bugs, ……. l ITS and FWD detectors in good health after installation ð SPD: > 99. 5% working channels SSD: > 97% working channels ð SDD: > 98% working channels FMD: > 99. 9% working channels ð caveat: because of missing services, most but not all functionalities could be tested ! 27 24/10/2007 23 rd RRB J. Other Detector Systems l TPC: long term burn-in of ¼ electronics, no failures ð resistance too large in LV distribution network (poor connectors) => being remade ð production LV power supplies have more noise => solutions under investigation l TRD: production ongoing smoothly ð 1 SM installed & under commissioning, 2 more SM’s at CERN, expect 5 SM’s ready for ’ 08 ð beam test & calibration of 1 SM in November l HMPID: commissioning ongoing ð 1 chamber (2. 5% of HMPID) does not keep HV, under investigation l PHOS: module #1 calibrated with cosmics, installation mid November ð assembly started for module 2 ð funding requested in Russia for modules 4&5 (expect decision spring 2008) l EMCAL: beam test of final design in Sept, support installation early Nov ð production from 2008 to 2010(2011), 1 st SM ready for 2009 l PMD: all parts arrived at CERN, under acceptance test & assembly, installation Feb 2008 l ACORDE cosmic trigger: fully installed, running, providing triggers 31 31/1/2007 LHCC Status Report J. Computing l Computing Resources ð ALICE deficit in 2008/9 (after recent updates of pledges/requirements) ~ 30 -40% µ Korea has signed the WLCG Mo. Physics Preparations l Physics with pp at 14 Te. V ð Survey and characterization of typical (‘Minimum Bias’) events µ multiplicity, pt distribution, particle composition, …. µ => tuning of Monte Carlo generators (which differ widely in their predictions) µ => evaluate background & detect. performance ð Specific QCD measurements for which ALICE is particularly well suited µ signals involving PID (eg ‘baryon transport: how are the beam protons decelerated’) µ low x-physics (a la Hera), charm & beauty production at low pt , … l Heavy Ion physics ð like at RHIC, we will get a wealth of significant @ new results already during a 1 st Pb short run at 1/20 design Lumi ð expect first Pb run right after first long pp run Optimization of pixel trigger thresholds to reach multiplicities > 10 -20 x average correction studies for rapidity distribution d.
