20/4/20 ent / ant : posters Can you create a poster to cover each of the graphemes? You might include the following: • the grapheme • example words • rules (look on the next 2 slides to be reminded of these) • memorable rhymes. -ent -ence -ency -ant -ance -ancy
This is the rule for –ant (as well as ance / ancy) Use these word endings when there is a related word with a long or short A phoneme in the right position. Usually, the –ATION word ending can help! For example: We can use this rule to know that it is ANT in observant, because I know the related word observation. Where the ATION ending isn’t applicable, I know to use ANCE and not ENCE with substance because the related word substantial has the short A phoneme in the right position.
This is the rule for –ent (as well as ence / ency) These word endings are usually used after the soft C (/s/) and G (/j/) phonemes and after QU, for example: We can use this rule to know that it is ENT in innocent, because ENT follows the soft C (/s/) phoneme. They are also often used if there is a related word with the short /i/ phoneme in the right position, for example: We can use this rule to know that it is ENT in confident and confidence because the related word confidential has a short /i/ phoneme.
Can you attach your poster designs onto our Classwork or post it onto our stream or email them to us so that we can do a virtual gallery walk? You might want to comment on which you think are the most clear and effective.
