ENGR 489 Not any other course! • COMP 489, ELCO 489, CGRA 489 and AIML 487 are separate courses, so have different regulations • Outlined in a separate handbook - although there are similarities please do not confuse the courses as there are differences • Certain projects are offered for multiple courses. If you opt for such a project you’ll be doing the ENGR 489 version with its rules. HANDBOOK

ENGR 489 ‘Individual’ project • The ENGR 489 project course consists of an individual project done under the supervision of one (or more) academic staff. • Individual projects with a similar theme and same supervisor(s) may be collated together as a ’group project’ • Still marked individually

ENGR 489 Timetable Week 1 Students rank projects using project allocation system. Week 2 Project allocation performed by course coordinator. Week 2 Students meet with supervisor(s) and begin work. Week 4 5 pm) (Friday, Students submit project proposals and IP forms on ECS Wiki (email confirmation of IP plans is sufficient for internal projects) Week 5 Work continues; students meet regularly with supervisors. . . . Week 12 (23: 59) Monday ENGR 489 Students submit their preliminary report. Mid-Year Break Work continues. Students meet with supervisors where possible. Week 1 Students can arrange to give presentation on preliminary report to elicit feedback (Not Compulsory). . . Work continues; students meet regularly with supervisors. Week 7 (end of) Students submit a draft of their final report to their Supevisors. Week 10 ENGR 489 students submit a project snapshot. Not assessed at this point. Week 12 (end of) Students submit final report. First Thursday of T 2 Assessment Period week 13 Students submit presentation slides by 11: 59 AM. First Friday of T 2 Assessment Period week 13 Students present their work during conference day.

ENGR 489 expectations • ENGR projects are expected to solve real-world problems using technically innovative solutions. • ENGR projects must show an emphasis on design and provide evidence of the effectiveness of the devised solutions through appropriate evaluation. • Students are expected to demonstrate craft in the design and implementation of their solution, and to use engineering processes and/or notations appropriate for their specialisation. ENGR 489 Project Allocation • Project Allocation System (PAS) is used by both staff and students to register and rank projects https: //ecs. wgtn. ac. nz/apps/projectselection • Algorithm used for matching students to staff and projects is a variation on the Deferred Acceptance Algorithm (DAA)

ENGR 489 Project Allocation • Students cannot pick more than two projects (excluding the industry projects) from any given (primary) supervisor. • Students must rank at least seven different projects • Staff rank the student-project selections. • Privacy • Some projects have co-supervisors listed. • Industry projects. • A student can pick as many industry projects from a supervisor and are not counted as part of ”maximum of two projects” constraint discussed above.

What is a ENGR 489 project? • Expected to solve a real-world problem using technical techniques • Emphasis on Design and providing evidence of its effectiveness through an Evaluation • Demonstrate craft implementation in design and • Literature survey is mainly from available systems in the market.

Supervision • Meet you regularly • Provide you with guidance (academic and scholarly) • Assess your progress and give you feedback • Guiding to University facilities • Help you to comply with Univ. regulations

Meeting • Expect you to meet with your supervisor every week (regularly) for a minimum of 30 minutes (working minimum). • For industry projects, weekly meeting with your industry supervisor. VUW supervisor’s choice to attend the meeting and not compulsory.

Your Responsibilities • Obligation to devote around 10 hours a week • Including mid trimester and year breaks • Attended supervisory meetings • Provide all required documentation to supervisors on time (if you want their prompt feedback) • Complete H&S and Ethics (if needed) documentation • Remember 30 points; weighs more in your honours calculation than other courses 4 XX
