Summary Grade 11: Revised Practical Assessment Task (PAT) A work piece which must include facing and diameter turning processes. (Design and make a simple project, practicing the above mentioned skills and taking time into consideration) This is all term 1 work. If this is not feasible due to high numbers, then all the practicals per ATP topic should be done and recorded and these used for the PAT mark. 100 marks = 25%
Summary Grade 11: Revised Practical Assessment Task (PAT) A work piece which must include facing, diameter turning, taper turning and milling processes. (Design a simple project, practicing the above mentioned skills and taking time into consideration) This is all term 1 work. 100 marks = 25%
Summary Grade 12: Revised Practical Assessment Task (PAT) Keep to the original PAT set by DBE with the following amendments: Where schools do not have the necessary capacity to have full practical classes or there is not enough time the following recommendations are made: 1. Teacher demonstrates thread turning showing all skills necessary, i. e. change gears, gearbox setting, set-up of the workpiece and tool. Cut some thread. Let each learner demonstrate the process without turning a thread. 2. Use threaded rod or a long bolt for the screw then turn & drill a head that will be held in place by the handle.
Summary Grade 12: Revised Practical Assessment Task (PAT) Keep to the original PAT set by DBE with the following amendments: (cont. ) 3. Use ø 10 bright mild steel round bar for the guide pins thread by hand. and 4. Use ø 8 bright mild steel round bar for the handle. Thread the ends by hand, use nuts that have the hexagons turned off (turned round) for the ends and peen the ends of the bar over. 5. Replace the base with a flat base with holes to bolt down. (Own design)
Summary Grade 12: Revised Practical Assessment Task (PAT) Keep to the original PAT set by DBE with the following amendments: (cont. ) 6. Milling: If time does not permit, the teacher will demonstrate the procedure to machine the step for the jaw linings, learners must demonstrate an understanding of the procedure. Then the jaw linings will just be bolted flush onto the jaws. 7. Chamfer on the jaws: If time does not permit, file the chamfer. As some schools have already done a significant amount of work towards PAT it would be difficult to leave any section/part out. All or some of the above could be done depending upon each individual schools circumstances. Externally set and externally moderated by subject specialist. DBE
