1. Purpose • To mediate the amendments of the trimmed 2020 Annual Teaching Plan

Purpose • To mediate the amendments of the trimmed 2020 Annual Teaching Plan including School Based Assessment for Grade 4 & 5 HL and FAL for implementation in August 2020 as per DBE Circular S 2 of 2020 (WCED Minute: 0014 of 2020) • To ensure meaningful teaching • To assist teachers with guided pacing and sequencing of the Curriculum • To assist teachers with effective planning of assessment

4. 1 Amendments to the ATP For Grades 4 & 5: • Listening and

4. 1 Amendments to the ATP For Grades 4 & 5: • Listening and Speaking - Oral activities that compromise social distancing have been removed (E. g. debate, interview, dialogue, roleplay, etc. ) • Reading and Viewing - Prepared and Unprepared Reading have been reconfigured to comply with the Covid-19 measures. (E. g. wearing of face masks) • Writing and Presenting – Creative Writing Project has been removed as it needs lots of preparation and teaching time. • Language Structures and Conventions are taught in context and based on the text used. Teachers are not expected to cover all the LSC concepts within a given bi-weekly cycle.

4. 2 Amendment to the weighting of Skills For Grades 4 & 5: • Listening and Speaking is highly compromised. – Weighting of Term 1 is not affected. – Weighting of Terms 2 -4 are heavily affected. – It will mainly focus on Listening Comprehension, (Un)prepared Reading, (Un)prepared Speech, Teacher-led discussions / conversations. • Reading and Viewing retain their weighting, with some slight shift in focus. • The weighting of Writing and Presenting is affected by the removal of the Creative Writing Project. • Language Structures and Conventions retain their weighting.

Conclusion • Grade 4 & 5, according to the *proposed calendar (return 03 August), will have 5 days in Term 2, 31 days (7 weeks) in Term 3 and 52 days (11 weeks) in Term 4. • The removal of the identified Listening and Speaking activities in Terms 2 -4. • Term 3 is heavy on the teaching of Literature features – in preparation for the Creative Writing Project, which has since been removed (because it requires lot of teaching time and guidance). • The removal of concepts is mindful of the critical and foundational role that Languages play in other content subjects. • Fortunately Language Skills are repetitive in nature – they are repeated across the Terms, the Grades and the Phases.
