2020 First Nations Launch Report Writing Virtual Workshop
Workshop Overview n Product Lifecycle and Reports n n Report Content – Rocketry Design, Build and Fly n n Review of the FNL Report Templates Report Writing - Best Practices n 2 What details are expected in the Design Reports Report Formatting – Microsoft Word Functionality n n Overview of the Report Process for FNL Some tips and tricks to simplify report writing 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Engineering Design Phases n Lifecycle involves sequence of phases n Each phase will include: n n In general the Lifecycle phases are: n Concept Phase n n n ideas are narrowed to few ideas, simulations/tests continue, build begins Critical Phase n n ideas brainstormed to solve a problem, simulations begin, simple tests begin Preliminary Phase n simulations continue, tests should be complete, build should be finalizing Production Phase n 3 Design/analysis – simulations – tests - build all simulation, test and build should be complete 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Engineering Design Reports n The Reports coincide with the lifecycle phases: n n – Proposal – PDR – CDR – FRR n The Reports should take place at the transition between phases n There should be a design freeze (no changes to the design) around the time of the reports n Each Report builds off the last report n 4 Concept Preliminary Critical Production So you need ALL reports 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Content - Overview n Proposal includes: n (students are brainstorming/researching/training and simulating) n n n Preliminary Design Report includes: n (students are refining ideas/simulation and beginning to mock up/test) n n 5 Facilities / Equipment Safety Technical Design Project Plan Vehicle Criteria (various designs on paper) Safety Payload Criteria (various designs on paper) Project Plan (estimates) 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Content - Overview n Critical Design Report includes: n (students have finalized design/tests and have begun building) n n n Flight Readiness Report includes: n (students have a complete, built-to-design rocket – and should understand its performance) n n 6 Vehicle Criteria (single design begin building) Safety Payload Criteria (single design begin building) Project Plan (no longer estimates, but actuals) Vehicle Criteria (single design build complete) Safety Payload Criteria (single design build complete) Project Plan (actuals) 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Proposal Recap n n Proposals are under review, feedback coming December 16 th A few items that need clarity: n Please use the template – and maintain the formatting n n Please read the template ahead of time n n https: //spacegrant. carthage. edu/first-nations-launch/tools-and-tips/ The Reports build on previous reports n 7 Reports aren’t something you can do in a few hours, the day before It will take days/weeks to complete all work required to fill out the template Pictures please! Use example reports we provide to understand the content and format n n If you need help with MS Word, formatting, email Mark If your Proposal is lacking, you will then struggle with PDR and so on 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Proposal Recap n Payload: Lander vs Rover n 8 Unlike Mars Vehicles which are mainly robotic rovers, we want a human lander 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
PDR Introduction n The PDR is due January 27 th Teams should continue working over the break (remotely) Report expectations include: n n n Vehicle Criteria Safety Payload Criteria Project Plan Suggested phase actions: n n Students are researching payload approaches (can mock up / test) Students are simulating rocket kit / motor combinations (understand details) n n Students can practice build techniques on samples, train to build payloads, avionics Teams should not be purchasing full scale rocket yet, until design is mature! n 9 - refine, more details (may still not have a single choice) - refine, more details Mars Teams (or teams that have a local mentor and launch site) can build a scale vehicle 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Formatting n Feel free to change up (personalize) the template n n n However, you should not change n n n Order of sections, section titles, footers, headers Table of Contents (except to update) The Template is the minimum information asked for! n n 10 You can change backgrounds, header types/formats, title page, text colors You may add subsections (continue heading types) You may add images, figures and tables and associated captions You may add List of Figures and List of Tables You may add as many Appendix as you need (note the page limits for reports) Please add images where deemed relevant! (picture worth a thousand words) You may expand analysis, or project plans or safety 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Formatting n Navigation Pane n n Table of Contents n n n When adding figures (tables) use captions (Reference -> insert caption) References to Sections and Figures/Tables n 11 Use tables as much as possible to list information, instead of paragraphs Can maintain an Excel spreadsheet then copy to Word Figure/Table Captions n n Insert 2 nd and 3 rd levels, ensure no blank headers Bullets vs. Paragraphs vs. Tables n n Should match navigation pane, remember to update Section Heading Styles and Levels n n Allows quick editing by jumping to sections In the text, make sure to reference your caption/figure (Reference -> cross-ref) 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Writing Best Practice n Use Team Structure for Report Writing n n n It is best to have consistent assigned tasks over the duration of the project Team Lead – handles more team management than technical Safety Officer – handles all safety documentation Simulation Lead – integrates and updates simulations as the project progresses Payload Team – handles the payload/challenge solution n Structures Team – handles the vehicle design, test and build n n 12 Hardware Software Recovery Avionics Airframe A minimum of 4 -5 people is ideal – if there are more, you can further subdivide tasks 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
Report Writing Best Practices n Report Breakdown – divide up the sections of the report, everyone writes separately, then one final integration at the end n Team Lead n n Safety Officer n n should write Payload Criteria section Structures Team n 13 should write Mission Performance Section, assist with other sections Payload Team n n should write Safety Section Simulation Lead n n should write General Information, Project Plan and Final Report Integration – assist rest of team as needed (should know a little of everything) should write Vehicle Criteria section 12/10/2019 Report Writing Workshop
