Outreach Strategy Outreach Access Make sure everyone understands the “ 5 W’s and H” of Census 2020. Make sure everyone knows how to access help in getting counted. • COLLATERAL: Pass out flyers, pledge cards, mail postcards • IN PERSON ASSISTANCE, DIGITAL ACCESS: Questionnaire Assistance Centers • DIGITAL: Promote on website, email signatures, social media, newsletters • IN PERSON: Talking to friends, congregations, neighbors, clients, and canvassing; staff tables/booths at community events; host workshops/seminars • VIRTUAL ASSISTANCE: 211, video & paper guides for online & paper forms • TEXT CAMPAIGN: Automated, virtual follow-ups with access information

Education & Outreach Goals 1. Inform community members of the basics of Census 2020. 2. Encourage them to stay connected and stay engaged by signing up for text message updates. 3. Promote Census jobs to support a complete count. Keep the messaging CONCISE, POSITIVE, and RELEVANT.

Important Talking Points 1. Make it clear you are NOT the U. S. Census Bureau, but you are an organization that wants to make sure everyone in our community is counted. 2. This is one big, team effort with local governments, nonprofits, community foundations, the State of California, and the U. S. Census Bureau to support a complete count. “Be counted in the 2020 Census. When you respond, everyone benefits. ”

Responses to Barriers We are looking for some group wisdom to responses to barriers for people hesitant to fill out the form. Examples of questions we’ve heard: • The government already knows where I am • I don’t want to report living in the wrong school district • I don’t care about government getting more money – they waste it anyways • I already took the Census, or I was counted in the last Census • Others? 12

Common Sense Safety Measures 1. Double check hyperlinks – ensure they come from trusted messengers (like @uwba. org or @census. gov) and/or lead to secure domains (https: //) before you click on them. 2. The Census will NEVER ask you for your Social Security Number, your bank account or credit card number, or money or donations. 3. Do NOT give your census response to someone to put into the website for you later. 4. When using public computers, be sure to not save your passwords, to log out of email accounts, and to delete your downloads. 5. Only Census Bureau employees are sworn under oath for life (under penalty of prison and a significant fine) to protect the confidentiality of your census response. 6. Double check the identity of Census Takers who visit your home by asking to see an ID badge – it should have their photo, a U. S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date.
