2019 Synthetic Biology Consortium Meeting National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases Brigitte E. Sanders, DVM, Ph. D. Program Officer Basic Sciences Program Division of AIDS October 29, 2019
NIAID Mission § The NIAID mission is to conduct and support basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. § NIAID has a unique mandate, which requires the Institute to respond to emerging public health threats.
NIAID Organization Three Scientific Divisions: § Division of Microbiology and Infectious Disease (DMID) § Division of AIDS (DAIDS) § Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Transplantation (DAIT)
NIAID High Priority Areas § Identify and qualify infectious disease-related biomarkers § Development of clinical diagnostics that are easy to use, cost-effective, and can diagnose individuals infected with pathogens or individuals who have been exposed to toxins. § Allergies, immunotherapies, autoimmune diseases, mucosal immunity, immunotherapeutic antibodies, vaccine adjuvants § Protection from radiation exposure, transplantation
NIAID High Priority Areas § Development of vaccines for infectious diseases. § Development of vaccine enhancement and formulation technologies with the goal of providing protection against infectious disease agents § Providing accelerated immune responses (more rapid schedules or reduced number of immunizations), § Increase of administration (e. g. , selfadministration), § Increase product stability to minimize cold chain requirements. § Discovery and development of therapeutics for infectious diseases. 5
NIAID High Priority Areas § Reducing incidence of HIV/AIDS including: developing and testing promising vaccines, developing and testing microbicide and pre-exposure prophylaxis candidates § Next generation of HIV therapies with better safety and ease of use § Research toward a cure § HIV-associated comorbidities, coinfections, and complications § Basic research: understanding the basic biology of HIV transmission and pathogenesis § Research to reduce health disparities in the incidence of new HIV infections or in treatment outcomes of those living with HIV/AIDS. 6
