2019 Summer Residential Governor’s School Presented by LCPS Department of Gifted Education

What is Governor’s School? • It is a month-long, residential, college-like program for selected gifted and talented high school students. • You must be a current sophomore or junior to apply.

What are the different Governor’s Schools? • • • Visual and Performing Arts; Humanities; Mathematics, Science, and Technology; Agriculture; Mentorships in Marine Science, Medicine and Health Sciences; and Engineering.

What can I expect? Each Summer Residential Governor's School focuses on one specific area. Students live on a college or university campus for four weeks A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of the students 24 hours a day, for the entirety of the program.

Governor’s School students may be involved in: • • • classroom and laboratory work, • In the mentorship programs, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. field studies research, individual and group projects and performances, rehearsals seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals.

Where are Governor’s Schools located? • Agriculture (AG) Virginia Tech in Blacksburg • Humanities (HUM) Radford University, Radford • Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) Lynchburg College, Lynchburg • Medicine/Health Sciences (MHS) VCU, Richmond • Engineering (NASA/NIA) Christopher Newport University, and NASA/Langley Research Center; the National Institute of Aerospace • Marine Science (VIMS) Christopher Newport University, and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science • Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) Radford University, Radford

What does it cost? • Governor’s School is funded through the Virginia General Assembly, the Virginia Department of Education, the hosting university and occasionally private foundations. • LCPS pays a portion of the cost for their students. • Students/Parents are responsible for the activity fee (varies among programs), their spending money and must provide their own transportation to and from their host university.

SRGS Application Process • The typed application consists of: • Career highlights (training, experience, activities, research, honors, etc. ) • Two teacher references • Essay/ Statement of interest • Test scores (academic/mentorship applications only) • Grades (academic/mentorship applications only)

Application Process • All completed applications must be submitted to your guidance counselor in December, 2018. PLEASE check with your Counseling Director for your school deadline. • Incomplete applications will be returned to you for completion.

Visual and Performing Arts • VPA applicants must register for the preliminary audition on or before October 19, 2018. The registration form is on the LCPS Gifted Education Governor’s School webpage. • The LCPS local audition date is November 5, 2018 at Briar Woods HS. Being selected to audition on the state level is not a guarantee for acceptance into Governor’s School. It merely means that you are eligible to audition with other competitors in the state.

Visual and Performing Arts State Auditions • State auditions will be in January 2019 at regional locations. • Selected students will be notified by the DOE as to their audition date and time in December. • LCPS uses the state audition requirements for our local audition. You may use the 2018 audition requirements as a guide to prepare. The 2019 audition requirements will have a few changes and haven’t been released yet. They will be posted as soon as they are available.

Visual and Performing Arts • Submit a VPA application only if you have been selected to audition at the state level. • If you are not selected to audition at the state level, you may apply to another Governor’s School. • ALL APPLICATIONS ARE DUE IN DECEMBER TO YOUR COUNSELOR CONTACT! Please check for your school due date.

Nomination Process • ALL completed LCPS applications are reviewed, read, and scored by a committee. All applications are read by multiple readers. • Applications are ranked in score order from highest to lowest. Visual and Performing Arts are ranked separately. • Nomination quotas are filled in the following manner: Agriculture; all other programs including mentorships; and Visual and Performing Arts.

Important! • Students can only apply to one program. • Acceptance to Governor’s School is very competitive! It is extremely important that you do your very best in all aspects of application completion. Writing your essay, auditioning, and selecting teachers/adults who will recommend you is very important. Be certain the adults you ask to recommend you can do so without reservation.

LCPS Nomination Quota • 2018 nomination slots available to LCPS were: Academic: 44 Agriculture: 21 VPA: 13 per discipline; 65 total

2018 LCPS Accepted Students Visual and Performing Arts: 19 Agriculture: 11 Humanities: 9 Medicine/Health Sciences: 2 Math/Science/Technology: 17 Engineering/NASA: 2

SRGS Foreign Language Academies • This program is part of Governor’s School, however, additional information and questions should be directed to the world language teacher(s) at your high school. It is separate from VPA and Academic Governor’s School.

Important Information • If accepted, students can attend one summer after the sophomore or junior year. • Program duration is 4 weeks. • Beginning and ending dates vary, however, sessions are concluded by the end of July. • NASA/NIA Mentorship: Students must be 16 years old prior to the start of the program and must be citizens of the United States in order to work at NASA/Langley Research Center. No exception to this policy is permitted.

Considerations… • SRGS is an excellent opportunity for personal growth, exploration of, and in-depth study of an academic field. • Attendance at a Governor’s School is an accomplishment and a resume builder. • SRGS offers you the opportunity to experience college life (dorms, cafeteria food, …)and meet like-minded students from all across Virginia. • It’s fun!
