2018 ELA Box Lacrosse Coaches Training
Why Box Lacrosse? ØLots of REPS ØIncreased stick skills & accuracy ØHigh Tempo / Dynamic Drills ØOff Ball awareness “If I had my choice, I would have every player under the age of 12 play box lacrosse exclusively or at least a majority of the time. The number of touches of the ball and the ability to develop better stick skills in a game of box lacrosse far surpasses what happens on a field. "- Bill Tierney, 7 x NCAA DI Champion, Head Coach for University of Denver "When you watch Canadian kids score, when you see their skill level around the cage, you wonder to yourself, 'Jeez, are we teaching kids [in the U. S. ] the wrong things? "-Coach Dom Starsia, 4 x NCAA Champion, Head coach for University of Virginia
Youth Box Highlights
TC Select Box League Association Responsibilities: • At least one Parent/Coach at each game. Two would be ideal so they could each work a door. • ENSURE EACH TEAM HAS A GOALIE FOR EVERY GAME. If a team does not have a goalie they will forfeit. I recommend trying to find a full time goalie or implementing a system where players rotate each week. Secure a goalie a few days before the game. • Goalie Gear: provided by ELA to each team; if you have a dedicated goalie, you can give it to them to keep, but they will need to leave with you at the last game Game Day: • TC Lacrosse will try to get 4 locker rooms for each facility • Arrive 25 min before the game to take the field immediately after previous game concludes • Most important – allow time to help the goalie to get their equipment on
TC Select Box League Game Time: • 3 min warm up • 3 - 15 min running time periods - 1 minute in between periods • 1 - 30 sec time out per game • Last minute is stop time (if 3 goals or less differential) • 1 min/2 min/5 min running time penalties Game Play: * All players must use a short stick * 4 x 4 goals and REAL box goalie gear * U 12/U 14 change on the fly & U 10 rotate every 2 min * 3 15 min running time periods. * OT = Penalty Shots (3 players)
ELA Rules • Coaches are not allowed to transport players to and from games/practices (except parents, of course, can transport their own kids) • Background check is required • Bullying policy reinforcement - ELA's policy and what to do if you see bullying • If you can't be at a game or practice - notify your head coach; head coaches should notify David Madison about conflicts and if there is a back-up plan with your assistant coaches – David’s Contact Info: davidmadison 2@icloud. com or 515 -805 -7093
Box Lax Rule Exceptions 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. No cross checking- we will allow hands together & D-mid type defense, but no hands apart and cross checking No boarding or forceful checking of players into boards. Boards have to be "live" and kids can't just run along them expecting a free lane, but no driving them into boards. Interference Rule: No contact when ball is loose or automatic change of possession. So no "man-ball" when the ball is loose. Scrum Rule: U 10 only. Scrum lasting 4 seconds will be whistled dead and ball will be awarded via alternate possession. No Hot rule at any level. Face offs: Players will start behind the "blue line" or whatever markings are on the turf. They can go 3 in defensive half and 1 in offensive or most common set up of 2 on defensive blue line & 2 on offensive blue line. Coaches decide. PLAYERS ARE RELEASED ON WHISTLE and NOT possession. Picks/Screens: We encourage the use of picks/screens and will be somewhat more lenient on calling a moving screen than field lacrosse. "Pass down, Pick Down" is a common & basic box offense. a. We will call blatant moving screens or if they come in and "hit" the player. " We have instructed to call moving screens somewhat similar to basketball. Some contact is allowed but you can't bang into a player.
