Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater • Pesticides in groundwater has been a concern

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater • Pesticides in groundwater has been a concern for several decades • National programs have been proposed to address these concerns • In the late 1990’s EPA proposed a program that was groundwater focused focus on: atrazine, cyanazine, simazine, alachlor, metolachlor

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater • EPA required states to develop “Generic Pesticide

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater • EPA required states to develop “Generic Pesticide Management Plans • Focus on five identified pesticides of national concern • Program completely revised in early 2000’s to include pesticides subject of WA Toxics Coalition lawsuit • Expanded to 57 pesticides • Introduction of State Management Plan

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Pesticide Plan contains all critical elements of PSP Program • Pesticides of Concern • Benchmarks • Specific Pesticide Management Plan Elements • Track Progress

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater States required to asses all pertinent data to Determine whether pesticide is raised to a level so it is designated as a Pesticide of Concern http: //points. wsu. edu If so management plan is developed and implemented

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater • Pesticides of Concern utilizes “benchmarks” to guide management actions • Lack of drinking water or environment standards lead to development of “benchmarks” • Environmental: https: //www. epa. gov/ pesticide-science-and-assessing-pesticide-risks/ aquatic-life-benchmarks-pesticide-registration • Human Health: http: //cida. usgs. gov/hbsl/ apex/f? p=104: 1:

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Pesticides that are designated as Pesticides of concern

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Pesticides that are designated as Pesticides of concern generally have protective language on the label that “should provide for sufficient protection” so that groundwater contamination does not occur…. . however

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD Toxic to small mammals. Chlorthal demonstrates

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD Toxic to small mammals. Chlorthal demonstrates the properties and characteristics associated with chemicals detected in groundwater. The use of this chemical may result in contamination of groundwater particularly in areas where soils are permeable (e. g. sandy soil) and/or the water table is shallow. Tetrachloroterephthalic acid, a breakdown product of chlorthal, is known to leach through soil as a result of agricultural and turf use s and ha s been found in groundwater which may be used for drinking water. Users 08963_Corrected Label_19 Jan 2010 are advised not to apply chlorthal to sand or loamy sand soils where the water table (groundwater) is close to the surface and where those soils are very permeable, i. e. well drained. Your local agricultural agencies can provide further information on the type of soil in your area and the location of groundwater used for drinking water.

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Overall Statements • Generally, wide spread pesticide occurrences

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Overall Statements • Generally, wide spread pesticide occurrences in groundwater (in PNW) is low as are detections • More herbicides detected than insecticides • Water management is emerging as a effective tool to reduce or eliminate pesticide occurrences in groundwater • A comprehensive view of pesticides in groundwater in limited due to lack of data

Oregon Pesticide Symposium All About Groundwater Pesticides with an affinity for groundwater Affinity depends on numerous factors, they include: • • Characteristics of the Pesticide Characteristics of the Soil Site Conditions Management Practices
