Why Did David Do It? • Jer 17: 9 (KJV) “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? ” • Romans 7: 18, 22 -23 (KJV) "For I know that in me(that is, in my flesh, ) dwelleth no good thing…But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. ” October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 7
David’s Heart was Deceitful • David Deceived Himself • He probably thought he deserved it • He was confident in his position • He did not think anyone would know • Didn’t think there would be consequences • David Set Himself Up? • Deut. 17: 17 – “Neither shall he [the king] multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away. ” • David had taken 5 wives by this time. • Never called on it by God or Nathan. David & Nathan • 2 Sam. 12: 1 -14 • 1 -6: Nathan’s parable invokes David’s wrath • 7 -9: David stands accused & shocked • God gave him everything, and would have given him more! • 10 -12: David will experience severe Consequences for his Sin • 13: David Responds with Humility • God takes away his sin, he will not die • 14: Because he gave God’s enemies occasion to blaspheme, David’s son will die. • Why did this end differently for David than Saul? Saul’s Response to Samuel • 1 Sam. 15: 3 - Saul sent by God to annihilate the Amalekites and everything they own • 1 Sam. 15: 7 -9 - Saul took the king alive, and spared the best of the sheep and cattle • 1 Sam 15: 13 -26 - Samuel confronts and condemns Saul • 1 Sam 16: 14 - The spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit tormented him October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 10
Observations of Saul’s Response • 1 Samuel 15: • 13: Saul claims to have obeyed - I did it! Yay! • 15: The people brought the best to sacrifice to the Lord • 20 -21: I did obey!. . brought back their king. The people brought the best to sacrifice to the Lord. • 22 -23: Samuel convicts Saul • To obey is better than sacrifice • In rebellion and arrogance, you rejected God • God rejects you as King • 24: Finally, Saul admits fault, but blames his people • Because I feared the people… • 25: Asks Samuel to pardon his sin…not God. David’s Response • 2 Sam 12: “I have sinned against the Lord” • Psalm 51 • (vs. 3 -4) • I was responsible • I sinned only against God • God is right and justified in his judgment • I was sinful since birth • (vs. 16 -17) • God finds no pleasure in sacrifices • Only in a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 12
Comparing David and Saul’s Response • Saul was Disobedient and Rebellious • It’s not my fault, It’s no big deal • A sacrifice will cover it up, God will forgive me • David was Disobedient and Repentant • It’s 100% my fault, It’s a HUGE deal • No sacrifice will cover it up, God doesn’t have to forgive me • My only hope is a broken spirit and a contrite heart October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 13
David’s Consequences • Death of his Youngest Son • Family Rape: Amnon and Tamar • Family Murder: Absalom’s revenge killing of Amnon • Absalom’s Rebellion: Raises an Army and Takes the Palace, rapes David’s concubines in public view • Absalom is killed when David’s men defeat Absalom’s army and retake the palace October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 14

Father’s Love Expressed Through Discipline • Heb. 12: 5 -8; 11 (NASB) • “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, Nor faint when you are reproved by Him; • For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines, And He scourges every son whom He receives. • It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ” • …to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Convicted of Sin • Romans 3: 23 (KJV) “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God” • We are Convicted by: • Fellow Brothers in Christ • 2 Tim. 2: 24 -26 – correct with humility • Conscience • Rom 2: 15 – the conscience bears witness • Revelation by the Holy Spirit through The Word of God • John 16: 7 -8 – When I go [Jesus], I will send the Helper, He will convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. • Eph. 1: 17 -18 – spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him • When convicted of Sin, our Response is a Reflection of our Faith in our Father and the value we put on that relationship October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 23
Respond w/ Rebellion • We do NOT value the Relationship • We do not want and can not hope for Reconciliation • 1 John 1: 8, 10 • If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves • If we say we have not sinned, we make God a liar • Rom 2: 4 -5 • Despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance and long suffering… • You treasure up wrath on the day of judgment • 1 Cor 3: 11 -15 • Everyone’s work will be revealed by fire on the Day…if anyone’s work is burned, they will suffer loss; but he will be saved as if by fire. Respond w/ Repentance • We value our Relationship with the Father • We have Hope for and Assurance of Reconciliation • 1 John 1: 9 • If we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us • 2 Tim 2: 25 -26 • God can grant us repentance, that we may know the truth; come to our sense and escape the snare of the devil • Psalm 119: 71 • It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn Your statutes. • 1 Cor 3: 11 -15 • Everyone’s work will be revealed by fire on the Day…if anyone’s work remains, he will receive a reward. Conclusion • David and Saul model God’s expression of Love through Discipline, and 2 different responses: • Repentance • Rebellion • This model of discipline plays itself out repeatedly as a critical part of our Sanctification Process • Through repentance, we participate in the process of sanctification, that is the perfecting of our faith. • As Believers We Must: • Fear the Consequences of Sin avoiding it at all costs • Repent with Hope for Reconciliation • Avoid Presuming on our Relationship with Christ October 2016 R 12. 2 Leadership Conference Slide 27
