Defining the ‘Diligence of Jesus’ • Opposite: Slothfulness – He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich. (Prov 10: 4) • What the diligence of Jesus is not: – Being busy and energetic – Working on lots of things – Being skillful, accurate, & fast (productive) – Being anxious and wearing ourselves out 2

The Mission of Jesus: The Father’s Will Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business? (Luke 2: 49) My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. (John 4: 34) 8

The Mission of Jesus – Not His own Will For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me (John 6: 38) I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. (John 5: 30) Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. (John 13: 16) 9

The Work of Jesus – Not His own Wisdom The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. (John 5: 19) When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things. (John 8: 28) For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. (John 12: 49) 14

The Timeline of Jesus – “While it is Day” Then Jesus said to them, “I shall be with you a little while longer, and then I go to Him who sent Me. ” (John 7: 33) “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. ” (John 12: 33 -35) “The hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation. ” (John 5: 28 -29) 20

The Diligence of Jesus (John 9 & 11) Why – Sent by the Father … to Reveal His Glory What – The works of Him who sent Him … Only When – While it is Day Whatever – Using Opportunities & Despite Danger Who? Diligence Commanded of Disciples • …Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, Why 12 serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing Whatever steadfastly in prayer (Romans 12: 10 -11) • And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, 12 that you do not When become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Diligence Commanded of Disciples • For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast Why of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel.
