2012 Presidential Election Web. Quest! Ms. Hannah’s Class
Introduction Imagine that it is November 5 th 2012 and TOMORROW is the big day! ITS ELECTION DAY! You are finally 18 years old and registered to vote when you got your license. The only problem is, who are you going to vote for? You have heard family and friends talk about some candidates, but some of them don’t believe in the same things you do. You have seen commercials and heard stories of one candidate bashing the other’s reputation. But you just want to know where these candidates come from and what they have to offer the United States. You want someone who best represents your beliefs and can hopefully make changes YOU are interested in seeing. The purpose of this Web. Quest is for you to explore the campaign platforms of the United States presidential candidates for the 2012 election and decide who best represents you and who you would vote for!
Tasks Part 1: Take a look at the first given resource, which gives background about what the historical presidential elections have been for individual states. Look at New York and answer the responses provided. Next choose any other states and answer the questions on the worksheet in the resource section for that specific state. These questions WILL be graded!
Tasks Part 2: You will start your research on the presidential candidates by visiting the listed websites be and gathering some basic information and background on the candidates. If you are interested in a certain topic of debate (e. g. healthcare, education, taxes, etc. ) try to find out how all the candidates individually feel about that topic. There will be guided questions available to you in the resource section where you will record responses and any notes you find necessary. These questions WILL be graded!
Tasks Part 3: You will use the provided graphic organizer to organize your findings of three candidates that you would vote for. You will be record the similarities and differences that you find between candidates. From these three, you will decide the one that you will ‘vote’ for based off your recorded information and personal preferences.
Tasks Part 4: You will comprise a short (1 -2 page, double spaced, 12 pt. font) typed paper at the end of class (or throughout class) on who you decided you would vote for with an explanation. Be sure to use some of the persuasive techniques that we have talked about to make your argument work in your favor. These papers must be completed by end of the period and be printed and stapled. This response WILL be graded based on the knowledge you present and the organization of the paper with the graphic organizer. Upon completing this Webquest, we will take a class poll and combine it will all the other 7 th grade classes to determine which candidate won!

Note that these are only the Republican candidates. Debates between the Democratic candidates will not begin until 2012. This is a 7 minute long clip, so be sure to pace yourself with other accomplishments. How did one of the candidates ‘plan to turn the country around’? Were any of your candidates present during this debate? If so, what were their points?

President Barack Obama’s page was not listed, but has been included above. Decide on your top 3 choices and fill in the provides Venn diagram. Each circle represents a candidate and be sure to fill in similarities in the overlapping sections.
Conclusion You will compose your 1 -2 page paper explaining who YOU would vote for and WHY. Be sure to include direct examples that you discovered throughout your quest and any personal reactions. Also try and use some of the techniques we have discussed on writing persuasively. Majority of your grade will be based on this paper so work hard and be sure to RE-READ IT FOR ANY ERRORS!
