A Portfolio As an Assessment Tool • Data collected over multiple points during a period of time • Systematic and organized collection of “evidence” that is analyzed and evaluated based on a set of predetermined standards Program Guide pg. 1 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 3

Florida Statute 1008. 25 Public School Student Progression • Provides for no social promotion • Students must score at a Level 2 or higher on the Grade 3 reading portion of FCAT • Grade 3 students who score at Level 1 may be exempt for “good cause” • A student may demonstrate reading skills equal to or above FCAT Level 2 performance through the Grade 3 Reading Student Portfolio Program Guide pg. 1 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 4

Schedule of Activities Date Activity Week of January 3 Begin to receive shipments of portfolio from PRIDE Enterprises. Principals will be sent secure grade 3 Portfolio answer keys via school mail. January 14 Fax the Screencast Verification Form by this date. January 14 -21 Test Chairpersons train school-site staff on administration of the portfolio. January 24 May 6 Teachers administer portfolios to all grade 3 students. Late May Receive 2011 Grade 3 FCAT scores. May 20* Complete documentation for students being recommended for promotion. May 25* Deliver completed forms to Region Center or appropriate office for approval. June 3* Pick up packets and notify teachers and parents/guardians of the decision to promote or retain students. June 8 Update Integrated Student Information System (ISIS) to reflect approved promotions. *Dates tentative pending receipt of FCAT results. Participation in Portfolio • All grade 3 students are to have a portfolio • Accommodations may be provided for students with disabilities, Section 504 students, and English language learners. • Only students who may be exempted are students with disabilities whose IEPs indicates they are not participating in the FCAT and are taking an alternative assessment Program Guide pgs. 4 - 6 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 6

2011 Portfolio - - Optional Portion - • District- provided supplemental passages (New) • Teacher supplemental passages & questions • Specifications must meet criteria established in the FLDOE Reading Item Specifications • Passages must be at grade 3 reading level; 60% literary, 40% informational, and 100 -700 words (average of 350) • Questions must assess the NGSSS reading benchmarks Tested on the FCAT 2. 0. Administration of the 2011 Portfolio Assessment • Administer during the second semester, January 24 to May 6, 2011, as required by the Florida Department of Education • Recommend one to two passage with corresponding questions be administered each week • Administer during Language Arts block Program Guide pgs. 3, 6 -7 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 13

Administration of 2011 Portfolio Assessment (Cont. ) • Passages and questions must be “cold reads” • MUST be administered as a classroom assessment activity, not as homework • Begin to administer portfolio as soon as order of passages has been determined • Debriefing of each passage and accompanying questions may take place only AFTER a passage is administered Program Guide pgs. 6 -7 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 14

Ways Students Can Respond to Questions • Teacher should decide how a student should respond: in writing or verbally • Responding verbally is an accommodation available to ANY student, although most respond in writing • All responses must be INDEPENDENT, regardless of the method of response • If a verbal response is given, the teacher must transcribe the student’s response, and initial next to each transcribed response Program Guide pg. 8 Student Assessment and Educational Testing 15

Scoring the Portfolio • Multiple-choice questions • Scored by the teacher using the answer keys provided • Each correct response represents one demonstration of mastery for the applicable benchmark. • A second reader must independently read and score the portfolios of any student recommended for promotion. Recording Evidence of Student Mastery • Keep track of benchmarks mastered • Refer to Score Summary Sheet for items measuring each benchmark • Mark student answer sheets with the number of demonstrations of mastery for each benchmark • Use Score Summary Sheet or similar chart to track benchmarks mastered for all students • Score Summary Sheet • Must be completed for all students recommended for promotion Program Guide pg. 9, Appendix F Student Assessment and Educational Testing 17
