Canadian Ranger Ocean Watch (CROW) Program Ed Carmack, IOS • DFO/DND partnership, DFO-Science provides training, instrumentation and a science plan that addresses international priorities (i. e. i. AOOS and SAON) • DND-Rangers collect climate and environment data, part of annual training patrols. • Downscaling from ‘global’ scale perspective of C 3 O to regional and community scale • Rangers have intimate knowledge of the area and unmatched skills of on-ice travel • Provide the strongest available platform to build a sustainable network to observe key climate and environmental parameters within the marine environment of the Canadian Arctic Achipelago. 18

Canadian Ranger Ocean Watch (CROW) Program Plan to commence in 2011 • simple measurements

Canadian Ranger Ocean Watch (CROW) Program Plan to commence in 2011 • simple measurements at predetermined locations by Rangers training patrols • typically, within a 300 km distance of patrols community • snow and ice thickness; snow/ice interface temperature; water column temperature, salinity, chlorophyll content, dissolved oxygen; and surface nutrient concentrations. • ice buoys deployed in the ice to measure ice and water temperatures at hourly intervals, and transmit this data realtime via an Iridium link 19
