小型FILE SERVER SYSTEM � 1969年 � 原先參與這個計畫的Ken Thompson與Dennis Ritchie在實驗室的角落找到一部DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation)的PDP 7主機，他們把MULTICS中的觀念帶到PDP 7之上，用組合語言完成了一個簡單的作業系統，由於只支援兩個使用者，當時Ken Thompson的同事Brian Kernighan 戲稱之為UNICS (Uniplexed Information and Computing System)，後來取諧音就成為Unix。 7
